LEWISBURG, Pa. - Calling it one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a Bucknell football player, head coach Tom Gadd today announced the selection of four Bison seniors as permanent captains for the 2001 season. Center Carson Book (Shermansdale, Pa./West Perry H.S.), running back Jabu Powell (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips H.S.), outside linebacker Mark Tallman (West Carthage, N.Y./Carthage H.S.) and cornerback Reed Tunison (Brooklyn, N.Y./Nazareth Regional H.S.) were selected in a vote of their teammates.
Book has been a key member of Bucknell's offensive line for four years. He has not missed a start in two years and has started at least two games in all four years with the Herd. Book has played every position on the line during his career, but has settled in at center for the last two seasons. His blocking ability has helped the Bison rack up nearly 400 yards of offense per game this season.
Powell is quite simply one of the top handful of running backs in school history. This season he moved into second place on Bucknell's all-time rushing list with 2,919 yards. He also ranks second in all-purpose yards (4,641) and has 12 career 100-yard efforts, which is third-most in BU annals. Powell ranks third in all-purpose yards and ninth in rushing in Patriot League history. A two-time All-Patriot League selection, Powell broke school and league single-game records with 282 rushing yards against Cornell last season. He rushed for 1,102 yards in 2000, sixth-best in school history. Also an excellent receiver, he has 63 career catches.
The "iron man" of the Bucknell defense who is one of the most consistent linebackers in the Patriot League, Tallman has never missed a varsity game at Bucknell and has started the last 31. He ranks fifth on the team with 43 tackles this season, including four sacks, eight tackles for loss, four fumble recoveries and an interception. One of those fumble recoveries was in the end zone against Fordham, his first career touchdown. Tallman enjoyed a memorable game last week against Lehigh, when he was responsible for three of Bucknell's five takeaways, pouncing on two fumbles and interception a Brant Hall pass. He has 153 tackles and 11 sacks in his career. Tallman was named Lewisburg Touchdown Club Defensive Player of the Week after the Fordham and Lehigh games this season.
Tunison is one of the Patriot League's best cover cornerbacks. He is a fifth-year senior who has made a strong return from two serious injuries - a knee ailment that wiped out his entire 1998 season and a broken leg that limited him to five games last year. In 2001 he has 24 tackles, a team-high six pass breakups and two interceptions, both of which he has returned for touchdowns. The two INT-TDs came against Towson and Georgetown and ties the Patriot League season and career records. Tunison was the recipient of the Clarke Hinkle Award as Bucknell's top defensive back/linebacker in 2000.
Gadd selects rotating game captains throughout the season, until the week prior to the final game when permanent captains are named. This is the first time in team history Bucknell will have four captains.
Following last week's 21-14 loss to No. 7 Lehigh, the Bison (6-3, 4-2 Patriot League) conclude their 2001 campaign this Saturday at Colgate (6-3, 4-1).
