Bucknell Crew Revisits the Schuylkill for the Philadelphia Frostbite

PHILADELPHIA - Two weeks after competing in the Head of the Schuylkill regatta, the Bucknell University men's and women's crew team returned to the Schuylkill for the Philadelphia Frostbite regatta on Saturday, Nov. 10.
The regatta spans just 2000 meters, the spring "sprinting" distance. It is also the site for Dad Vails, the team's biggest race of the spring season.
The women's novice "A" and "C" boats turned in the team's highest finishes of the day, as each boat placed second in its heat. Coxed by Sherri Glicklin, the "A" boat was comprised of Lauren Donnelly, Katherine Thompson, Laura Jacque, and Candice Olszewski in the stern four, and Emily Frost, Vi Ngo, Jocelyn Dautel, and Meiko Nevels in the bow four. They finished a close second in 9:31.6 to Loyola (9:25.8) while beating Binghamton (9:45.1), Delaware (10:05.2), St. Mary's (11:07.1), and Haverford (11:27.4).
The women's novice "C" was coxed by Meri Horn, with Kristin Willner and Helen Britz as stern pair, Allie Gasbarra, Amy Ukena, Paola Grande, and Liz Ayerle as middle four, and Katie Rector and Rachel Trusheim as bow pair. Their finishing mark of 10:03.1 earned them a second place finish and placed them ahead of Lehigh B (10:07.5), Loyola B (10:08.5), Lafayette C (10:39.5), and University of Maryland (12:43.9).
Six different boats took third on the day, including the women's lightweight varsity four, coxed by Christina Meng. Stroked by Kate Boschen, with Emily Smith in three seat, Jill Harrington in two seat, and Joan Wendler in bow, they rowed a tight race against Delaware and Buffalo. Their third-place finishing time of 8:58.0 placed them less than a second behind Buffalo (8:57.1), and just seven seconds off Delaware's first place finish (8:50.7).
The varsity women's open four was also coxed by Meng, and was comprised of (from stroke to bow) Boschen, Becca Newman, Lynn Hootman, and Wendler. Bucknell placed third, and its time of 9:41.48 trailed Penn State (9:14.8) and Temple (9:04.02), but placed them ahead of fourth-place UMBL (9:48.1) and fifth-place Loyola (10:14.65).
Also finishing third for the women's team was the varsity lightweight eight, the novice eight "B" team and the novice "D" boat. The varsity lightweight eight consisted of Meng, Smith, Harrington, Donnelly, Boschen, Marissa Witkowski, Ngo, Wendler and Nevels. After a rough start, the crew found themselves in fourth place, behind Delaware (8:32.88) and Penn State (8:33.24), but Bucknell slowly worked it way back and passed up Franklin & Marshall (9:24.54) to take third, with a finishing time of 9:10.86.
The women's novice "B" team, coxed by Jackie Shull, featured experienced novice Maureen Clarke stroking, Charissa Reimer in (seven) seat, Jenna Carroll in (six), Tracy Menkowski in (five), Lauren Ewald in (four), Kara Schroepfer in (three), Lauren Pica in (two), and Liz Digani in bow. The boat finished third in a time of 10:02.0, well ahead of Manhattan (10:37.6) and Patriot League rival American (10:53.4), but behind Temple (8:58.1) and Lafayette (9:09.5).
Bucknell's women's novice "D" was coxed by Nicole Tomlin, who guided Elena Keates in her competitive debut in stroke seat. Kelly Landis was (seven), Sarah Dickinson (six), Sarah Bennessel (five), Liz Marut (four), Jen Prunoske (three), Emily Edwards (two), and Stephanie Malenich sat bow. Bucknell placed third, with a finishing time of 11.00.2, behind Guelph (9:51.5) and Buffalo (10:42.4), but well ahead of fourth place NYU (11:30.36), and fifth place UMBC (12:33.5).
The men's team also had a boat finish third on the afternoon. The novice men's eight was coxed by Paolo Palugod, and included rowers Ilya Bondarenko, Dan Foster, Mike Mathes, Steve Patak, Joe Tucci, Chad Weidermann, Sergio Umana and Rob Bentinck-Smith. They placed behind Columbia (7:32.6) and Colgate (7:44.4), in 8:19.3 but ahead of Lafayette (8:21.3) and Maryland (9:33.4).
Two other squads took fourth, including the women's open weight eight and the varsity men's eight. Finishing with a time of 8:54.38 was the open weight crew of Glicklin, Newman, Thompson, Gasbarra, Olszewski, Jacque, Frost, Schroepfer, Dautel and Hootman. With a finishing time of 8:54.38, the boat placed behind Delaware B (8:15.38), SUNY Binghamton "A" (8:18.82), and Bryn Mawr (8:54.38), while beating St. Mary's (9:41.51).
The varsity men's eight, coxed by Nicole Tomlin was comprised of Michael Brooks-Williams, Ben Pfeiffer, Raph Crowley, Artie Hughes, John Purcell, Matt Albrecht, Ilya Bondarenko and Brian Albert. The boat finished ahead of Maryland (7:51.45) with a finishing time of 7:43.49, behind Penn (6:43.6), Ithaca (6:59.0), and Lafayette (7:36.36).
In addition, the men's varsity pair of Brooks-Williams and Jeff Dasch posted an 8:48.06 clocking to come in fifth.
