LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior Erica Olson scored the game-winning goal in the 76th minute, and Cornell defeated the Bucknell University women's soccer team 1-0 in non-league action this afternoon at West Field.
Bucknell saw its two-match winning streak end with the loss, and the Bison fell to 9-5-0. Cornell upped its record to 4-6-3.
Olson's goal came with 14:10 remaining the second half. Sophomore Adie Sherwood set up the tally by drawing Bucknell keeper Kelly Kannen to the right side of the net before sending a cross to a wide-open Olson, who punched in her second goal of the season from point-blank range.
The Bison controlled the ball for much of the first half and despite out-shooting the Big Red 5-3, BU was unable to dent Cornell goalie Katie Thomas. After picking up a pair of saves in the opening stanza, Bucknell keeper Laurie Purse was replaced by Kannen in the second half. Kannen recorded her first three collegiate saves over the final 45:00.
Bucknell will return to Patriot League action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when it hosts conference front-runner Navy. The match will decide the Patriot League regular season champion and the right to host the upcoming Patriot League tournament.
