BOSTON, Mass. - The Bucknell men's water polo team was in competition at the ECAC Championship on Saturday, falling to 13th-ranked Massachusetts, 12-4, in the opener and dropping a 8-3 decision to Brown in the second game of the day. The Orange and Blue fall to 8-13 overall with the two losses.
Against UMass, junior Daniel Lonnerdal (Davis, Calif./Davis) and freshman James Danforth (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) accounted for all of Bucknell's scoring, tallying two goals each. Danforth led the team with three points, joining freshman Paul Yerkes (Orlando, Fla./Winter Park) with one assist. Against the 13th-ranked team in the nation, the Bison defense managed eight steals, including a game-high three from freshman goalkeeper Ernest Martin (Winchester, Calif./Perris) who played the final three minutes of the contest. In addition to his three thefts, Martin made three saves. Senior David Kennedy (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day School) was in the net for the first three and a half quarters, stopping two Minutemen shots.
In the Brown contest, the scoring was spread out among three different players. Senior Ryan McCarty (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day School), junior Adam Yerkes (Orlando, Fla./Winter Park), and sophomore Scott Afzal (Ellicott City, Md./McDonogh School) each tallied once in the loss. Kennedy played the entire game in the cage, adding to his school record career saves total with 12 stops. The co-captain now has 886 career saves.
The Bison challenge George Washington at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday in a must-win game. With a loss, the Orange and Blue will be out of the competition. A win will put them in contention for seventh place in the 2:00 p.m.
