WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Bucknell University swimming & diving teams opened their 2001-02 campaigns this evening at Patriot League rival Army, and came away with mixed results. The women's team won all but two events to claim a 153.5-89.5 victory, while the men's squad dropped a 144-92 decision.
Leading the charge for the women's squad was freshman Jackie Feinthel, who collected three individual victories in her collegiate debut. Feinthel touched the wall first in the 1,000 free (10:41.87), 200 fly (2:10.14) and 500 free (5:11.10). Other Bison picking up multiple victories were freshman Jamie Flick and sophomore Sarah Petcavage. Flick broke the Bucknell record while taking first in the 200 breast in 2:26.68, and came out on top in the 200 IM (2:13.80) as well. Petcavage won both the 1-meter diving (211.28 points) and the 3-meter diving (212.55 points).
Junior Darby Golino and senior Abby Weaver also came away with one individual win. Golino raced to a first-place finish in the 200 back (2:09.74), and Weaver surged to the victory in the 100 free (54.48).
Both of the women's teams' relays were victorious as well. Golino, Flick, freshman Ashley Aiken and Weaver teamed up to win the 400 medley in 4:00.75, while sophomore Krisztina Poda, freshman Robin Gibson, sophomore Meghan Freese and Weaver earned 11 points with their first-place performance in the 400 free.
The men's team found itself pitted a formidable opponent in Army, the defending league champion that was also picked first in the Patriot League Pre-Season Poll. Senior Christopher Feinthel was the lone individual winner on the evening for the Bison, as he captured the 200 back in 2:00.58. Bucknell's 400 free relay team also placed first in 3:14.55.
Both teams return to action next Saturday when they participate in the home-opener against Drexel University beginning at 11 a.m.
