LEWISBURG, Pa. - Running back Jess Brinson rushed for 164 yards and a touchdown and Bucknell used a 27-point opening quarter to run past Georgetown 34-0 before 8,050 fans on Homecoming Day at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
Bucknell won its fifth straight contest and improved to 5-1 overall, 3-0 in the Patriot League. Georgetown had its two-game winning streak snapped in falling to 2-4, 0-4.
The rout began just 16 seconds into the contest when Bucknell cornerback Reed Tunison ran an interception back 29 yards for a touchdown on the game's first play from scrimmage. It was Tunison's second touchdown of the season. Georgetown lost three yards on its next possession, and the Bison needed only four more plays to get back in the end zone on Todd Wenrich's 4-yard touchdown pass to J.C. Morgan. Chris Lundberg's extra point attempt slipped wide left, and Bucknell led 13-0 4:14 into the contest.
Todd Warmington's 14-yard scoring run made it 20-0 with 5:51 left in the first quarter, and four minutes later Albert Marquardt tightroped the back of the end zone for an 18-yard TD reception from Wenrich. Marquardt's 47-yard catch preceded the touchdown grab.
Brinson, starting in place of the injured Jabu Powell (ribs), gave Bucknell a 34-0 cushion with a 53-yard touchdown sprint around left end with 8:17 left in the second quarter. The sophomore back went over 100 yards for the first time in his career, and it was Bucknell's highest ground total since Powell racked up 215 against Duquesne last season. Brinson also had a 55-yard touchdown reception called back by a penalty.
The Bucknell offense slowed after intermission and four turnovers contributed to a scoreless second half.
The Bison defense notched its first shutout since a 33-0 blanking of Towson in November of 1997, while Georgetown was also held scoreless for the first time since 1997. Bucknell outgained the Hoyas 528-167, including 252-28 on the ground. It is the second time in three games the Bison defense held an opponent to less than 30 yards rushing. Bucknell had five sacks and yielded an average of just 2.7 yards per play, while averaging 8.0 yards of its own. The Herd also had three more takeaways, giving them 19 in the last four games.
Wenrich completed his first nine passes of the day for 145 yards and two touchdowns before finishing 19-for-29 for 264 yards. He threw two interceptions. Marquardt led all receivers with six catches for 102 yards.
Georgetown used three quarterbacks with starter Sean Peterson finishing 12 of 20 for 104 yards.
Bucknell visits Fordham next Saturday, while Georgetown travels to Marist.
