LEWISBURG, Pa. - Army goalkeeper Sara Johnson posted her league-leading seventh shutout of the season, and the Black Knights dealt Bucknell University a 2-0 defeat in Patriot League women's soccer action at West Field this afternoon.
With the loss, Bucknell dropped to 7-4-0 and 2-2-0 in the Patriot League. The Bison's loss was also their first at home this season after winning their first four games in Lewisburg. Army improved to 10-6-1 and 2-3-0 in league play.
Both teams struggled to create scoring opportunities in the early going, and the score was tied 0-0 at halftime. Army out-shot Bucknell 5-3 in the opening stanza.
In the second half, junior Kelly Schachtler gave Army all the offense it would need when she hooked in a shot from the top of the box and into the back left corner of the net in the 70th minute. With less than three minutes remaining, senior Karen Tien added an insurance goal when she squirted a shot past Bucknell goalie Laurie Purse on a scramble for the ball in front of the net.
Johnson finished the afternoon with four saves, while Purse picked up three stops for the Bison.
Bucknell will continue its Patriot League schedule on Wednesday when it travels to Lehigh in a 6 p.m. kick-off.
