WORCESTER, Mass. - Sophomore Savannah Rennels tied the game at 1-1 with just under four minutes left in regulation, and junior Kristie Simon scored the game-winning goal 9:18 into overtime, as the Bucknell University women's soccer continued their hot start, downing defending Patriot League champion Holy Cross 2-1 this afternoon.
The Bison, who won for the third consecutive match, are now 7-2-0 (2-1-0 Patriot League), and are off to their best start in school history. Holy Cross fell to 4-5-2 and 0-4-0 in league play.
With the victory, Bucknell picked up its first win over Holy Cross since 1997. The two teams played to a 2-2 tie in Lewisburg last season.
The Crusaders were the first to get on the scoreboard, as Kate O'Shaughnessy scored her fifth goal of the season just 5:20 into the contest. Holy Cross carried their 1-0 lead into halftime after out-shooting the Bison 7-3 in the opening stanza. Junior goalie Laurie Purse helped the Bison keep the game close by making a pair of first-half saves.
The second half turned into a defensive battle, with neither side finding the back of the net for the opening 40:11. The Bison finally broke into the scoring column when Rennels punched in her team-leading seventh goal of the season with just 4:49 left in regulation to force overtime. Freshman Michelle Santonacita notched her first career assist on the goal.
The two teams played scoreless soccer for over nine minutes in overtime before Simon converted a penalty kick in the 100th minute to give Bucknell its second dramatic victory in a row. Simon's goal, her third of the season, was her second game-winner in three games. She also recorded the go-ahead goal in a 3-2 non-league victory over St. Joseph's on Sept. 30.
Purse finished the afternoon with four saves for the Bison.
Bucknell will take a break from its Patriot League schedule when the team visits Columbia in a 7 p.m. start Tuesday evening.
