LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell junior forward Vicki Quimby (Wilson, Pa./West Lawn) scored a career-high 33 points on 12 of 14 shooting from the floor and nine of 10 from the free throw line, in addition to grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds for the Bison, in a 74-57 victory over visiting Cornell on Saturday, January 6. The double double was Quimby's fifth of the season and 24th of her career.
The first half featured four ties and four lead changes over the first 15 minutes with neither team taking a larger lead than five points. With the Orange and Blue leading, 23-20, with 5:25 left in the stanza, Bucknell outscored the Big Red 21-10 over the final five minutes to build a 12 point halftime advantage, 42-30. Sophomore guard Molly Creamer (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) had seven of her 12 first half points during the stretch.
Both teams came out sluggish in the second frame, and the score was only 50-34 five minutes into the second 20 minutes. Bucknell built its advantage to as many as 21 in the half, but the Big Red battled back to get within 13 at 63-50 with 5:03 to go. The Bison used a 5-0 run to extend their cushion back to 18 points, but another spurt by Cornell cut it to 68-55 with 2:22 to go. Bucknell responded by outscoring the Big Red 6-2 over the final two minutes, including five points from Quimby, for the final margin of victory, 74-57. Quimby scored 19 of her 33 total points in the second half and needs just 29 points to reach the 1,000 point mark for her career.
Joining Quimby in double figures were Creamer with 12 points, along with nine assists and seven rebounds, and freshman Desire Almind (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) with the second double double of her career with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Also contributing offensively were junior Monique LeBlanc (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Feehan) and sophomore Kate Franks (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) with eight and four points, respectively. Junior Rebekah May (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey) chipped in three points, and junior Kate Rounsley (Lock Haven, Pa./Lock Haven) and freshman Jade Fleming (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) both had two.
Cornell was led offensively by Jennifer Linker and Do Stevens with 11 points each.
Bucknell, which had fallen to Cornell, 75-74, in the championship game of the Cornell Classic in December, improves to 9-3 overall and 5-0 in Davis Gymnasium. The Bison open Patriot League play at Navy on Wednesday, January 10, at 5:15 p.m. Cornell falls to 6-5 overall.
