ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Bucknell women's basketball team has improved to 10-3 on the season and opens Patriot League play 1-0 with a 60-57 victory at Navy on Wednesday, January 10. Sophomore Molly Creamer (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) led all scorers with 24 points in the contest, 15 of those coming in the second half.
The Navy defense held Bucknell to its lowest halftime total all season at 25 points, despite the Orange and Blue shooting 54.5% (12-22) in the half. The Bison were averaging 37.7 points in the first half of play prior to this evening's game. Bucknell led by as many as seven in the first frame, 20-13, with 5:10 to play, but an 11-5 run by the Midshipmen to close the half cut the margin to one, 25-24, at the break.
Navy carried its momentum into the second stanza, opening the half on a 12-2 run to go up by nine just four minutes into it. The Bison showed resilience and responded with a 9-0 run, keyed by four points from freshman Desire Almind (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional), to tie the contest at 36 a piece with 11:07 to play. Exactly two minutes later with the score tied at 41, junior Vicki Quimby (Wilson, Pa./West Lawn) hit the second end of two free throws to give BU a 42-41 lead it would not relinquish the rest of the way.
Bucknell built its advantage to as many as eight in the frame, but the Mids continued to battle, tying the game at 53-53 with 2:18 left in the game. The Bison used a 5-0 spurt to push their cushion to 58-53 with under a minute to play, and the played solid defense down the stretch to hold off the host.
Creamer was one of three Bison in double figures scoring as Almind tallied 17 points and Quimby added 13. Quimby, who needs just 16 points to reach 1,000 in her career, led the squad on the boards with seven.
Navy falls to 5-9 overall and 0-1 in Patriot League play. The Mids were led by Courtney Davidson's 14 points, in addition to 13 from Maile Shimoda.
