Bison Improve to 7-5 Behind 73-58 Victory Over the Mountaineers

LEWISBURG, PA - Sophomores Boakai Lalugba (East Orange, N.J./Bishop Francis Essex Catholic) and Brian Werner (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade) posted double-doubles to lead Bucknell to a 73-58 non-conference win over Mount St. Mary's in Davis Gymnasium Wednesday evening.
Lalugba scored 20 points and hauled down 10 rebounds to record his second double-double of the season, and Werner chipped in with 10 points and 10 rebounds as Bucknell improved to 7-5 on the year.
The Bison jumped out to a 38-26 halftime lead after shooting 53.3% in the opening 20 minutes. Lalugba tallied 12 points and a half dozen caroms in the period, while freshman Jeremiah Bennett (Lookout, W.Va./Fork Union Military Academy) gave the Orange and Blue a boost off the bench with seven points and six rebounds. Bucknell's defense held the Mountaineers to just 28.6% shooting and forced 11 first-half turnovers.
Bucknell opened the second half with a six-to-two run, and stretched its lead to 16 at 44-28 with 17:10 remaining. Mount St. Mary's cut the margin under ten three different times in the period, but the Bison used a 6-0 spurt to build the lead back to 15 at 71-56 with 0:50 to play. The Bison continued the hot shooting, connecting on 60% of their attempts in the final 20 minutes to secure the victory.
Junior point guard Bryan Bailey (Hempstead, N.Y./South Side), the team's leading scorer this season, was the only other player from the Orange and Blue in double-figures with 14 points and three assists. The victory was head coach Pat Flannery's 101st as mentor of the Bucknell program.
Angel Rivera and Jerry Lloyd scored 14 points apiece to lead the Mount which saw its record drop to 2-10.
Bucknell will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Canisius in Davis Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
