LEWISBURG, PA - Senior guard Clive Bentick paced a balanced Canisius scoring attack with a team-high 16 points to lead the Golden Griffins to an 81-58 victory over Bucknell in non-conference action this afternoon. Canisius improved to 8-3 with the win and snapped Bucknell's (7-6) five-game home winning streak in Davis Gymnasium.
Bentick tallied eight points in each half, and also collected a game-high three steals as the Griffs won for the fifth time in seven outings on the road this season. In addition to Bentick, the Canisius scoring attack included three other players in double figures. Junior forward Tory Jefferson and senior center Darren Fenn each had 14 points, while freshman forward Jon Ferris added 13. Fenn, an All-MAAC player last year, returned to the court for the first time after undergoing knee surgery just 15 days ago.
Canisius used the three-point line to stave off any possible push Bucknell put forward. Back-to-back threes from Ferris and Jefferson stretched the Griffs early lead to 16 at 31-15 with just over six minutes to play in the first half. Bucknell put together a 12-5 run to cut the deficit under double-figures at 36-27, but Hodari Mallory buried a three with seven seconds left in the period to give the Griffs a 39-27 lead at the break.
The second half was not much different, as Canisius connected on four threes and never let the Bison cut the lead to single digits. The Griffs shot 50% in the period and got eight points from Ferris who started in place of the injured Toby Foster (ankle sprain).
Bucknell was led by the play of sophomore center Boakai Lalugba (East Orange, N.J./Bishop Francis Essex Catholic) who tied his career-high with 23 points and set a new personal standard with 14 rebounds. It was his second straight double-double and his third of the season overall. Sophomore forward Brian Werner (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade) was the only other Bison in double figures with 12 points.
Bucknell will open Patriot League play on Wednesday, January 10, when it travels to Annapolis, Maryland, to take on the Midshipmen of Navy. Tip-off in Alumni Hall is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
