LEWISBURG, Pa. - Holy Cross senior Monika Rothemich scored a game-high 14 points and the Crusaders defense held Bucknell to just 13.8% (4-29) shooting in the first half on their way to a 76-53 victory over the Bison on Wednesday, January 17. The loss was the first of the season for BU in Davis Gymnasium and BU's first defeat in Patriot League play.
Holy Cross opened the game with a 5-0 run and never trailed on their way to a 38-12 halftime lead. The Bison went without a field goal from 14:26 to 10:00 as the Crusaders built their lead to nine. A made layup by sophomore Molly Creamer (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) with 8:09 left in the half to make it 17-10 would be the final two-point bucket for the Orange and Blue, while Holy Cross went on a 21-2 run to close the frame. Two free throws by junior captain Monique LeBlanc (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Feehan) gave the Bison 12 points at the break to the Crusaders' 38.
Where Bucknell struggled offensively, Holy Cross was on fire. The Crusaders shot 15-for-28 in the first half for a 53.6% accuracy. HC also outrebounded the Bison, 25-18, in the frame.
BU actually outscored Holy Cross, 41-38, in the second half, but the 26-point halftime deficit was too much to overcome. Bucknell improved from the field, going 15-of-25 (60.0%) in the second half to finish the game at 35.2% (19-of-54), its lowest field goal percentage of the season.
Creamer tied Holy Cross' Rothemich for game-high scoring honors with 14 points, 10 of those coming in the second half. Bucknell junior Vicki Quimby (Wilson, Pa./West Lawn) joined Creamer in double-figures with 12 points. With 17:28 remaining in the contest, Quimby hit the front end of two free throws, giving her 1,000 points in her career. Only the second female in school history to reach the plateau as a junior, Quimby now stands in 11th place on Bucknell's all-time scoring list with 1,007 career points.
Also in double-figures for the Bison was junior Kate Rounsley (Lock Haven, Pa./Lock Haven) with 11 points and six rebounds.
Bucknell falls to 11-4 overall and 2-1 in the Patriot League. The Bison host Army on Saturday, January 20, in a conference game slated to tip-off at 1:00 p.m. Holy Cross improves to 10-7 overall and 3-0 in the league ledger.
