COLLEGE MEN'S SOCCER - Bucknell 3, Monmouth 0
LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to four games with a 3-0 shutout victory over visiting Monmouth on Wednesday, September 27. It is the second-straight shutout for the Bison and fourth of the season.
Bucknell freshman Chris Beekman (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) scored for the third straight game with his third collegiate goal just 3:43 into the contest to give the Orange and Blue the early 1-0 lead. Sophomore Ian McVeigh (Northampton, Mass./Cathedral) took the throw-in from the left side of the field and Beekman one-touched the ball into the bottom right corner. The two teams settled down and played the rest of the half fairly even with Bucknell holding the slight edge in shots, 8-7, and carrying the 1-0 lead into the locker rooms.
At the 22:14 mark of the second stanza, sophomore Nick Taylor (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) tallied his third goal of the season off a direct kick in front of the cage to put the Bison up 2-0. Just 12 minutes later, junior Andrew Aurand (Middleburg, Pa./Middleburg) knocked in his third score of the year from about 26 yards out to give Bucknell the 3-0 advantage. Taylor, who finished the game with three points, was credited with the assist.
Freshman goalkeeper Steve Whitaker (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) recorded three saves for the Bison in registering his second straight shutout, and third of his career. Whitaker has only allowed two goals in 398 minutes of work.
"I thought we were flat in the first half," commented Bucknell head coach Brendan Nash. "We came out in the second half, though, and got needed leadership from the seniors and just played soccer like we know how."
Bucknell led in shots, 20-13, and the two teams were even in corner kicks at two each.
The Bison improve to 4-4-1 overall on the season and host Patriot League rival Army on Saturday, September 30, for a 4:00 p.m. game. Monmouth falls to 3-3-2 on the year.
