Bison Fall To Pittsburgh In Season Opener

LEWISBURG, PA -- The Bucknell men's soccer team dropped a 5-1 contest to the University of Pittsburgh in nonleague play at Bucknell's East Field on Friday, September 1. It was the season-opener for both teams.
Pittsburgh junior midfielder Mark Sikora and sophomore forward Josh Whitham scored two goals each and senior forward Spencer Barton added two assists to lead the Panthers past the Bison, 5-1, in Bucknell's first home game of the season.
Sophomore defender Miles Dowiak opened the scoring 31:03 into the game on a cross from senior midfielder Andrew Light. With just 30 seconds left in the first half, Whitham netted his first goal of the night with an assist from Barton to give Pittsburgh a 2-0 halftime advantage.
Sikora gave the Panthers a 3-0 cushion just 4:51 into the second stanza, scoring on a cross from Barton for his second assist of the game. At the 60-minute mark, Sikora scored his second goal of the game, capitalizing on a goalie deflection, to build the Pittsburgh lead to 4-0. Whitham finished the Panther scoring with a goal at the 85:38 mark of the game. Junior forward Peter Veltri was credited with the assist.
Bucknell junior midfielder Andy Aurand (Middleburg, Pa./Middleburg) put the Bison on the board with just over a minute remaining in the contest, helping the Orange and Blue avoid the shutout with a 5-1 final score.
Pittsburgh outshot Bucknell, 25-8, while holding a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Bison (0-1) next travel to Robert Morris on September 4 for a 4:00 p.m. game. Pittsburgh is 1-0.
