Seven Former Swimmers Named to Patriot League's All-Decade Team

LEWISBURG, PA - The Patriot League announced its All-Decade Swimming Team this week and seven former Bucknell University swimmers were among the 40 honored as members of the squad. The team, comprised of 20 male and 20 females, includes student-athletes from the inception of the league in 1990-91 up and through the 1999-2000 season.
Margaret Grunow (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich), class of 1993, Kathleen Hartnett (Danville, Calif./Sam Ramon Valley), class of 1994, and Jen Myers (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield), class of 1998, were chosen to the team on the women's side. Don Steenson (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory), class of 1992, Steve Droste (Circleville, Ohio/Choate Rosemary Hall), class of 1993, Jay Gross (Newton, Mass./Newton North), class of 1993, and Alex Johnson (Blawenburg, N.J./Deerfield Academy), class of 1999, were selected to the men's team.
Grunow was one of the best freestyle swimmers to ever grace the waters at Bucknell and in the Patriot League. She still holds four individual school records, and is also a member of four school-record relay teams. Grunow's school marks in the 50-freestyle (23.58), 100-freestyle (51.11) and 100-butterfly (56.02) are also Patriot League Championship records and overall Patriot League records. In addition, she is part of the 400-freestyle relay team that holds the school, championship and league record with a time of 3:30.09. She was a two-time Patriot League Swimmer of the Meet, and was a four-year all-league performer.
In addition, she is listed among the top-10 all-time performers in the 200-fly (3rd), 200-IM (4th), 500-free (8th) and 800-free relay (9th).
Hartnett holds the Bucknell record in the 100-backstroke with a time of 58.38, and joins Grunow as a member of the four school-record relay teams. She is among the all-time top-10 performers in the 50-free (third), 100-free (3rd), 200-free (7th) and 200-back (2nd), and holds a share of the school, championship and league mark as a member of the 400-free relay team that touched home in 3:30.09.
Myers broke onto the scene at Bucknell as a freshman when she earned Patriot League Swimmer of the Meet honors in 1995. She still holds school marks in the 200-back (2:03.30) and the 200-individual medley (2:09.78), and is listed among the top-10 performers in two additional individual events (100-back, 2nd, 400-IM, 4th) and all five relays.
Steenson set the Bucknell, Patriot League Championship, and league record in the 100-back with a time of 50.14 in 1992, and is a member of the school's record 400-medley and 400-free relays. He and his teammates touched home in the 400-free relay in a time of 3:02.12, which still stands as the Patriot League Championship and league record. In addition, Steenson, whose brother Rick also swam for the Orange and Blue, is among the top-10 all-time performers at Bucknell in the 200-back (2nd), 200-IM (3rd), 200-free (5th), 100-free (8th), 200-medley relay (3rd), 200-free relay (8th), and the 800-free relay (7th).
Droste holds the Bucknell, Patriot League Championship and league record in the 200-back with a time of 1:50.11. He paired with teammate Jay Gross to win co-Swimmer of the Meet honors at the 1993 Patriot League Championships. In addition, Droste is among the top-10 all-time performers list at Bucknell in the 100-back (3rd), 200-IM (4th), 100-free (9th), 200-medley relay (2nd), 400-medley relay (3rd), 200-free relay (3rd) and 400-free relay (3rd).
Gross was one of the best sprint swimmers in Bison history. He was honored with Patriot League Swimmer of the Meet honors at both the 1992 and 1993 league championships, and still holds championship records in the 50- and 100-freestyles with times of 20.50 and 44.87, respectively. He was part of the school, championship, and league record 400-free relay team that swam a time of 3:02.12. In addition, Gross was on the school record 400-medley relay squad that touched home in 3:24.69.
In addition, he is on the Bucknell all-time top-10 performers list in the 50-free (2nd), 100-free (2nd), 100-fly (3rd), 200-medley relay (2nd) and 200-free relay (3rd). He was honored as the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete in men's swimming in 1992.
Johnson was another in a long line of solid freestyle swimmers for the Bison. He is a member of the foursome that still owns the school, Patriot League Championship, and league record in the 200-free relay with a time of 1:22.01. In addition, he is among Bucknell's all-time top-10 performers list in the 100-free (4th), 200 free (4th), 50-free (5th), 400-free relay (2nd) and 400-medley relay (5th). In 1999 he was recognized for his efforts in the classroom with the league's scholar-athlete award in men's swimming.
