Lewisburg, Pa. --- After the opening session of the 1st Annual Bucknell Swimming Invitational, the Bucknell men's and women's teams stand in second place behind the University of Pennsylvania. The event will conclude tomorrow with sessions two and three, to begin at 9:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., respectively, at the Freas Rooke Pool.
Junior Abby Weaver (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) paced the women's attack with a first-place finish in the 200-yd IM in a time of 2:11.43. She also finished second in the 50-free, touching home in 24.87, and swam the anchor leg for the Bison's winning 200-Medley Relay team. The relay, which also included freshman Meghan Freese (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock), sophomore Lauren Mosler (Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes) and senior tri-captain Molly Lowe (Hamilton Square, N.J./Steinert), won gold in a time of 1:50.23 which ranks seventh on the school's all-time list. Weaver, Freese, sophomore Alyson Steckbeck (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) and freshman Anna Sommers (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) came in second in the 200-Free Relay with a time of 1:41.76.
On the men's side, senior tri-captain Jeff Sharpe (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) captured first-place in the 50-free with a time of 21.83, as Bucknell finished 1-3-4-6 in the event. Sharpe was also part of the Bison's winning 200-Free Relay. He, junior Chris Neary (Philadelphia, Pa./Central), freshman Peter Garvin (Silver Springs, Md./Our Lady of Good Council), and senior tri-captain John Ferriter (Yorktown, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) touched home in a time of 1:25.58 to rank ninth on the Bucknell all-time list in the event. Sharpe, Neary, freshman Jack Sheehan (Wenonah, N.J./Gateway Regional), and senior Ben Lim (Singapore, SG/Anglo-Chinese School) placed third in the 200-Medley Relay in a time of 1:37.56.
