LEWISGURG, PA- The Bucknell men's lacrosse team defeated #16 Army, 10-9, in a thriller on Saturday, March 18. The Bison victory over the Black Knights is just their second in twenty tries, and the first since the undefeated season of 1996. The Bison improve their record to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the Patriot League
Junior Michael Cheng (Floral Park, NY/Floral Park) and freshman Dennis Geraghty (King's Park, NY/St. Anthony's) each notched three goals in the victory. Senior Alex Gibson (Baltimore, MD/Loyola) scored a goal and added three assists. Senior Keith Poisella (Wilton, CT/Wilton) scored a goal and an assist, while senior Brad VanNostrand (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) added two helpers.
The Orange and Blue jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Egan and Cheng, before Army came back to end the first quarter 3-2. Cheng and Egan scored again in the second quarter to make the lead 5-2 at halftime. The third quarter saw the Black Knights tally three times to just two for the Bison, with Poisella and Gibson scoring. Geraghty scored the game winner with 4:48 to go in the game, as the Bison scored three goals in the fourth period. Army scored four times in the quarter to cut the lead to one goal with just under four minutes to play.
Freshman goaltender Justin Sussman stood tall between the pipes in place of the injured senior Andy Smith (Canton, NY/Canton), making twelve saves. Sussman made some fantastic stops to preserve the Bison victory.
Bucknell heads to Lafayette on Saturday, March 25 to take on the Leopards at 1:00 p.m.
