LEWISBURG, PA- The #21 Bucknell men's lacrosse team pulled out a late victory, 8-7, over the UMBC Retrievers on Wednesday, April 5. The Bison, who never trailed in the game, scored the game winner with just 4.5 seconds left in the game.
Junior Michael Cheng (Floral Park, NY/Floral Park) played the role of hero for the Orange and Blue when he scored his second goal of the game with just 4.5 seconds left. A brilliant feed from Gibson left Cheng open for a quality shot, that found the back of the net. Junior Brian Treacher (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) tied up the ensuing faceoff long enough to kill the clock. Senior Alex Gibson (Baltimore, MD/Loyola) provided his usual firepower, scoring two goals and dishing out three assists. Fellow senior Keith Poisella (Wilton, CT/Wilton) notched two goals.
Senior Ed Costello (Montgomery Village, MD/Gonzaga), Gibson, Poisella and senior Brad VanNostrand (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) each scored in the first half to put the Bison up 4-1. The Retrievers scored three consecutive goals to tie up the game before Poisella scored a man-up goal. Cheng notched his first of the game to put the Bison up 6-4, but UMBC scored the next two goals to tie it once again. A Gibson goal put Bucknell back on top, but a man-up goal by Collin Meerholz against the second best man-up defense in the nation leveled the score at 7-7. The Bison went a man-up on a cross-checking penalty with just 1:14 left in the game, but could not capitalize.
The win gave head coach Sid Jamieson his 200th career victory, making him just the 13th Division I coach ever to reach the 200 win plateau. Jamieson, the only varsity coach in Bucknell history, is in his 32nd season at the helm.
The Bison will not be in action until they host Patriot League foe Colgate on Friday, April 15 at 7:00 p.m.
