LEWISBURG, PA - The 18th ranked Bucknell men's lacrosse team lost a tough game, 10-9, at Penn State on Wednesday, April 20. The Nittany Lions, ranked 27th in the nation, were able to withstand a Bison comeback and even a one-goal deficit to win the game.
Junior Michael Cheng (Floral Park, NY/Floral Park) continued his torrid goal-scoring pace, notching four goals, including the Herd's first three of the game. Cheng has scored 15 goals in the last five games. Seniors Alex Gibson (Baltimore, MD/Loyola) and Keith Poisella (Wilton, CT/Wilton) each tallied two goals, while Gibson added an assist. Fellow senior Jim Egan (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) rounded out the scoring for the Bison a goal of his own. Freshman goalkeeper Justin Sussman (Towson, MD/Friends Academy) allowed seven Penn State scores in the first half, but finished with 14 saves, including a couple of highlight reel stops.
The Bison jumped out to a two goal lead on the strength of two powerful Cheng goals. The Nittany Lions came back to take a 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 7-3 halftime lead. The Orange and Blue mounted a furious comeback in the third quarter, outscoring Penn State 4-1, with Gibson tallying the first two. The fourth quarter was a real battle with BU jumping out to 8-7 and 9-8 leads only to have PSU tie the game at 9-9. With 8:01 left to play when an attempted pass in front of Bucknell's own net was intercepted by Penn State senior tri-captain Don Mayerhofer. Mayerhofer caught the ball on the run, stopped quickly and fired the ball in the net, beating a diving Sussman, who had been awaiting a pass behind the goal. The loss drops Bucknell's record to 6-4.
The Bison will travel to Worcester, MA to take on Patriot League foe Holy Cross on Saturday, April 22, at 1:00 p.m. Bucknell finishes out the season at home vs. Lehigh on Saturday, April 29 at 1:00 p.m.
