LEWISBURG, PA --- Colgate tight end Barry HoAire hauled in a six-yard touchdown pass with 1:05 remaining to give the Red Raiders a 24-21 victory over Bucknell, handing the Bison their third straight loss - all of which have come in the final 65 seconds of the game.
Senior tailback Randall Joseph carried the load for Colgate (7-4), carrying the ball 38 times for 192 yards, including a 49-yard touchdown run. The 192 yards marked a season-high for the senior running back. Joseph also concluded his career with over 3,000 yards rushing in a Red Raider uniform.
After falling behind 3-0 on a 27-yard Russ Abrams field goal, Bucknell (6-5) scored its first touchdown of the game late in the first quarter. The Bison scoring drive didn't take long to develop, lasting only two plays. Junior tailback Jabu Powell (19 carries, 68 yards) touched the ball on both plays, catching a Lucas Phillips pass for ten yards on first down, before breaking through the line on the next play for 33 yards into the end zone.
Colgate answered with a touchdown of its own in similar fashion in the second quarter. After gaining just one yard on first down, Joseph went for 49 yards, breaking several tackles at the line of scrimmage and finding his way to paydirt. The run gave the Red Raiders a 10-7 lead that they brought to the locker room for halftime.
The first drive of the second half pretty much told the story as Colgate held the ball over six minutes before getting into the endzone. Quarterback Rob Markert (11-for-19, 142 yards, 2 TDs) connected with Jason Mattes (5 catches, 69 yards) on a 21-yard touchdown pass, extending the Colgate lead to 17-7. In the second half, the Red Raiders held the ball for over 21of the potential 30 minutes.
Bucknell did put together two scoring drives, one late in the third quarter and another midway through the fourth to gain the lead 21-17 late in the game. The first score was a Powell run from 12 yards out, his second touchdown of the game and 14th of the year, capping off a 75-yard drive. Phillips (18-for-28, 212 yards) connected with wide-out Kyle Harris (4 catches, 76 yards) for 29 yards for Bucknell's final score with 5:28 remaining.
However, Colgate answered with its biggest drive of the game, marching 77 yards in 11 plays to regain the lead. With 5:12 remaining in the game and the Bison leading 21-17, Colgate took the ball on its own 23-yard line. Joseph gained 36 of the 77 yards on the ground and Markert took care of the rest. On the drive, Markert completed 3 out of 4 attempts, totaling 41 yards, and threw what proved to be the game winning pass, finding Barry HoAire from six yards out giving Colgate the lead for good, 24-21. For HoAire, the reception was only his seventh of the season, but he is no stranger to the end zone with four touchdown receptions this year.
