LEWISBURG, PA - Bucknell football coach Tom Gadd announced his 2000 season captains at today's Lewisburg Touchdown Club Luncheon. During the season, Gadd appoints game captains each week. Then, prior to the last game of the year, the players vote on who will be the squad's permanent captains.
The 2000 team chose seniors Lucas Phillips (Glen Burnie, Md./Mt. St. Joseph's), Justin Lustig (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and Vince Ficca (Princeton Junction, N.J./Lawrenceville School) as this year's captains.
After serving as the backup quarterback for his first three seasons in the Orange and Blue, Phillips has stepped into the starters role and helped to lead the Bison to their sixth straight winning season. Heading into the Colgate game, he has thrown for 1,565 yards -- a total that ranks as the 11th-best single season in Bucknell history. Phillips has completed 52.7% of his passes (146-of-277), thrown seven touchdown passes and been intercepted just six times.
Lustig ranks second on the team and in the Patriot League with six interceptions from his strong safety spot this year. With nine thefts during his career, he is tied for ninth place on the school's all-time list. One of the true leaders in the secondary, he is fourth on the team with 54 tackles, including a team-high 12 stops behind the line of scrimmage.
Ficca leads the Bison and ranks third in the Patriot League with 9.0 tackles per game (90 total). He has intercepted two passes, collected six tackles for a loss of yardage including a quarterback sack, broken up seven passes and blocked a punt. In his three seasons with the Bison since transferring from Boston University, Ficca has totaled 245 tackles as an inside linebacker.
Bucknell, 6-4 overall and 2-3 in the Patriot League, will close out the 2000 season when it hosts Patriot League rival Colgate at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Kickoff is at 12:30 p.m.
