Bucknell Men's & Women's Cross Country Teams Compete at Mid-Atlantic Regionals

State College, Pa. --- The Bucknell University men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Mid-Atlantic Regionals at Penn State University in State College, Pennsylvania, this morning with hopes of obtaining berths in the NCAA Championships. In order to automatically qualify, Bucknell had to finish among the top two in either race. The women ran extremely well, but finished fourth behind Georgetown (36), West Virginia (94), and Villanova (95) with 132 points. The men finished 10th with a team total of 255.
Junior co-captain Becki Marshall (Montgomery, N.Y./Pine Bush Central) was once again the top runner for the Bison, crossing the finish line in ninth place overall in the 6,000-meter run with a time of 21:08.73. Marshall improved three places in the standings from last year, and has a chance to be chosen to the NCAA meet as an individual competitor. When you remove Georgetown, West Virginia and Villanova, she finished as the fifth individual runner.
Sophomores Theresa Dennis (Wilkes Barre, Pa./Hanover Area) and Andrea Beisser (Ames, Iowa/Ames) joined Marshall on the all-region team by finishing among the Top-25 in the race. Dennis was 17th with a time of 21:33.37, and Beisser was 18th in 21:34.21.
Running in her hometown, junior Chris Crowe (State College, Pa./State College) placed 40th with a time of 22:27.03, while senior co-captain Mandy Youmell (Weedsport, N.Y./Weedsport) closed out Bucknell's top-five runners by finishing 54th in 22:42.70.
Junior Kelly McConnell (Danville, Pa./Danville) and freshman Jennifer Malcolm (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) also competed, but did not figure in the scoring for the Orange and Blue. McConnell crossed the line in 95th place with a time of 23:34.55, while Malcolm was 112th in 23:57.36.
On the men's side, sophomore Greg Costello (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) was Bucknell's top finisher, placing 25th with a time of 31:24.06 on the 10,000-meter course. He earned all-region status with his Top-25 finish.
Senior co-captain Brad Wertz (Altoona, Pa/Bellwood-Antis) was 49th in 31:51.65, followed by sophomore Bryan Johnston (Kane, Pa./Kane Area) in 56th place with a time of 31:58.09. Junior Evan Honeyfield (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) and senior co-captain Kevin Weatherill (Swedesboro, N.J./The Peddie School) completed Bucknell's top-five in 59th (32:00.57) and 66th place (32:13.59), respectively.
Junior P.J. Ward (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) and sophomore Louis Palma (Gladstone, N.J./Bernards) also competed, but did not figure in the team scoring for the Bison. Ward finished in 79th place in a time of 32:41.31, while Palma was 94th in 33:08.64.
While the men and women did not qualify as team entrants into the NCAA's, Marshall will have to wait until Monday to find out if she has qualified as an individual.
