Worcester, Mass. - Holy Cross senior forward Colleen Schmitt (Amherst, MA/Amherst) scored two goals including the game-winner to lead the Crusaders to a victory over Bucknell, 4-1.
Schmitt got the ball rolling for HC as she scored on a pass from sophomore Liz Tutella (Blandon, PA/Fleetwood) with 20:05 left in the first half to put Holy Cross up 1-0. She scored the eventual game winner five minutes later taking the feed from junior Mary Beth Clark (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook) to make it 2-0 in favor of Holy Cross. Tutella scored the third goal on an assist from senior Jes Gulino (Bellingham, MA/Bellingham) with two minutes left in the first half to make it a 3-0 Crusader lead at the break. Clark sealed the game for HC with an unassisted goal with 4:35 left in the game. Bucknell cut the lead to three at 2:25 in the second half, when junior midfielder Dena Ebert (W. Long Branch, NJ/Shore Regional) scored an unassisted goal to bring the score to 4-1, but the afternoon seemed to belong to the Crusaders as they outshoot the Bison, 27-3.
Freshman goalie Jennifer Corsilli (Fairfield, NJ/West Essex) made one save in the net for the Crusaders, while Sonja Wettergreen (Norwalk, CT/Brien McMahon) made 18 saves for the Bison.
Senior co-captain Annie Lavigne (Sullivan, NH/Monadnock) was selected the tournament most valuable player for her leadership at the center midfield position. She was able to control the pace of the play in both games and posted several key interceptions. Due to her play in the midfield, Holy Cross was able to keep the ball in the offensive zone and dominate play in both games.
The Crusaders are back in action when they host the NCAA Play-In game against Stanford this Tuesday, November 7th at 1:00 PM. Stanford advances to the Play-In game by defeating the University of California, 2-0, in the Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference championship game.
