LEWISBURG, PA. --- Bucknell head men's lacrosse coach Sid Jamieson announced early last week that seniors J.C Metivier (Portland, Maine/Salisbury School), Mark Juelis (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and Brian Treacher (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) have been named captains for the 2001 season.
"As a group, we are extremely excited to have three very mature, good, intense and competitive individuals. Not only will they lead us on the field, but off the field as well and that is an important part of this team. Coach Fedorjaka and I are looking forward to working with these three veteran players come springtime," commented Jamieson on his three captains.
Metivier returns for his last season at Bucknell as a third year starter in the defensive unit. The past two seasons he has started in 24 of 25 total contests. Over the course of those two campaigns, Metivier recorded 89 ground ball pick-ups, 48 in '99 and 41 in '00. Metivier will be a strong leader for the Bison defense and should have a great year at close defense.
"J.C. is a very good player and is a little bit more of a quite leader, but solid on the lacrosse field. He brings to the field his own special talent and skills," commented Jamieson.
Treacher was a key member of the face-off crew during the 2000 campaign. This year Treacher returns to the field for his final season with the Orange and Blue looking for that NCAA tournament bid that eluded Bucknell last season.
"Treacher has probably made more progress than most of the athletes that have come through this program. I think his ability to lead and enthusiasm for what he does is infectious. He is an intense kid that loves to play and will be a vocal leader for this year's squad," said Jamieson.
Juelis, an All-Patriot League Second Team selection last season, will help run a Bucknell defense that returns its core group of starters. He led the Bison last season with 65 ground balls and managed to score two goals and two assists from his long stick defensive position.
"Juelis is kind of in the middle, he can be vocal and at other times not so vocal. He has really earned the respect of the coaching staff and the team. Juelis has been an important leader for us in the past and will continue the trend this coming season," commented Jamieson.
Along with the announcement of the 2001 captains, Coach Jamieson welcomes eight freshman recruits to the men's lacrosse team. The freshman class represents seven different states and includes two All-American selections, six all-state selections and eight all-conference selections.
"This year's freshman class is a fun group of guys who love to play the game," said Jamieson. "They are a very diverse group geographically which indicates that exceptional players can be found at the national level. This class also demonstrates a balanced recruiting process for positional needs."
Representing the state of New Jersey in the Class of 2004 are three very talented individuals. Craig Fleishman (Wayne, N.J./Montclair Kimberley Academy) comes to Bucknell as New Jersey's all-time leading scorer with 153 goals and 132 assists, a grand total of 285 points. The previous state record was 283 points. Fleishman garnered All-American honors at the conclusion of his senior season. Also hailing from the Garden State are the Wikander (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) twins, both midfielders. Alan and his brother Luke arrive at Bucknell after two very successful high school careers. Alan was a two-time all-state selection at Sparta High School, where he scored 44 goals his senior season. Brother Luke, also a two-time all-state selection, shared many honors with his sibling but did manage to score six more goals during his senior season with 50.
Wes Fetchet (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) is no stranger to the Bucknell campus as his older brother, Brad '99, played lacrosse at Bucknell for Coach Jamieson. Fetchet will don the Orange and Blue uniform after having competed on a Connecticut state runner-up lacrosse team in 1998. He was also a member of the ice hockey team in high school, which shows the great athleticism he possesses.
Traveling the greatest distance to Bucknell is midfielder Brendan Fitzgibbons (Dallas, Texas/Hillcrest), who was an all-state selection in Texas. While on the Hillcrest lacrosse team, Fitzgibbons also garnered two all-conference honors.
The last three members of the freshman recruiting class are Blaise Fletcher (Glen Mills, Pa./Archmere Academy), Eric Hannon (Nashua, N.H./Nashua), and Josh Mayer (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster). Fletcher and Hannon are the only two long stick defensemen in the recruiting class and will more than likely be thrust into action by Coach Jamieson. Fletcher was a two-time All-American during both his junior and senior years for lacrosse. He started in the National High School North-South game. Hannon comes to Bucknell as a three-time all-state selection, a member of the Boston Globe All-Scholastic team, and the NHIAA Defensive Player of the Year for 2000. With his help, his team won the D-1 State Championship in 1998. Mayer is the only net minder in the recruiting class and will provide plenty of competition at the position after having been an all-league, all-section, and all-area selection in 2000. He was inducted into the Brewster High School Hall of Fame for his lacrosse achievements.
"I think our freshman recruiting class is outstanding. There are a number of individuals in the class that will see significant time on the field this spring. Our recruiting continues to grow and the increase in quality each year is a reflection of the success this program has embraced over the last five years," commented Coach Jamieson on the class of 2004.
Bucknell fans will have to wait until February to see the men's lacrosse team play. The Orange and Blue will have several very challenging preseason scrimmages in 2001. On February 10 the Bison will scrimmage at Towson and on February 17 the team will scrimmage Duke, Notre Dame, and Johns Hopkins at Duke University.
