LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell field hockey team will make its third-consecutive appearance in the Patriot League Championship Tournament this weekend, November 3-4, at Holy Cross. It is the fifth time in the six years the tournament has been held that the Bison have been participants.
Bucknell enters the championship weekend as the third seed behind top-seeded Holy Cross (12-5, 6-0 PL) and second-seeded Fairfield (12-7, 4-2 PL). Last year's champion, Lafayette (8-10, 3-3 PL), falls in at the fourth seed.
Bucknell carries an 8-10 overall record and a 3-3 Patriot League mark into the championship weekend. The Bison picked up league wins over two of the three tournament participants throughout the regular season. The Orange and Blue defeated Lafayette, 2-1, early in the season and most recently handed Fairfield a 3-2 loss. Against Holy Cross, Bucknell suffered a 2-0 setback.
BU is led offensively by three juniors. Melissa Maher (Marcy, N.Y./Whitesboro), Dena Ebert (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) and Lauren Campbell (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) are the top three scorers on the 2000 squad. Maher has had a solid season, setting a career-high with 10 goals and handing out one assist for a team-best 21 points. Her three game-winners are also tops on the team.
Ebert, the 1998 Rookie of the Year, has tallied nine goals and two assists on the year for 20 points. It is the third-straight year the midfielder has reached double-digits in points.
Campbell is having a career season, netting six goals and two assists for 14 points. The six goals are a career-high for the defender.
On the defensive end, senior tri-captain Katie Yingling (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and junior Monica McCorry (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock) will look to make a repeat appearance on the All-Patriot League team. Both Yingling and McCorry were representatives on the second team last season. In addition, sophomore goalkeeper Sonja Wettergreen (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) returns in the net for Bucknell after being selected as the Patriot League Rookie of the Year in 1999.
The Bison take on the Fairfield Stags at 3:00 p.m. on November 3, playing for a chance to participate in the championship game, being contested at 2:00 p.m. on November 4. The winner of the Patriot League Championship Tournament will then participate in a play-in contest versus the Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference representative.
