COLLEGE MEN'S SOCCER - Bucknell 2, Navy 1 (OT)
LEWISBURG, Pa. -
Bucknell senior Geza Lendvai-Lintner (Madison, N.J./Madison) scored his third game-winning goal of the season in front of the Homecoming crowd as Bucknell defeated Navy, 2-1, in overtime in Patriot League action on Sunday, October 29. With the win, the Bison secured a berth in the Patriot League tournament for the first time since the 1993 season. The Midshipmen got on the board first, scoring just 15:05 into the opening half. Junior Nick Huber made the most of a Navy corner kick, heading the ball past Bucknell goalkeeper Steve Whitaker (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) for his first goal of the season. Junior Justin Fishburn was credited with the assist.
Nearly 12 minutes later, the Orange and Blue evened the score at 1-1 when junior Andrew Aurand (Middleburg, Pa./Middleburg) tallied his fourth goal of the year unassisted from 18 yards out.
Bucknell had several scoring opportunities in the second half, but could not convert on its eight shots in the frame. Navy nearly ended the contest in regulation on a shot with three seconds left, but Aurand was in the right place at the right time, stopping the ball on the goal line and sending the game into the extra session.
The Bison dominated overtime from the first whistle, outshooting the Midshipmen, 3-0, and leading in corner kicks, 3-0. It was the final corner kick that would lead to the game-winner for Bucknell. After a scramble in front of the cage, Navy's goalkeeper Brian Steckroth pounded the ball out to a waiting Nick Taylor (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) about 25 yards out. Taylor sent the ball back into the box, where Lendvai-Lintner headed it into the lower right corner for the game winning score 7:18 into the third frame.
"I am proud of our seniors for accomplishing this win on senior day," said head coach Brendan Nash. "Making the Patriot League tournament is a goal that has eluded them since their freshman year and I'm glad they finally made it."
The contest against Navy was Bucknell's eighth overtime game of the year. The Bison are 5-1-2 in games that go beyond 90 minutes.
"Overtime is something our guys have confidence in," said Nash. "We do a lot of conditioning in practice and we call it overtime. Once we get into the extra session, we don't fear skipping a beat because of fatigue."
The win was also Bucknell's seventh at home this season. The Bison end the regular season with a home record of 7-1-1 with the only loss coming in Bucknell's season-opener against Pittsburgh.
The Orange and Blue (9-8-2, 4-1-0 Patriot League) conclude the regular season at Lehigh on November 4 at 1:00 p.m. With a win over the Mountain Hawks, Bucknell would earn the right to host the Patriot League tournament, something that has not been done by a Bison squad since the 1990 season.
Navy finishes its season at 9-6-1 overall and 2-4 in Patriot League play.
