LEWISBURG, Pa. -
Five Bucknell women's lacrosse players were named to the All-Patriot League second team. Junior Ashley Evans (Millersville, Md./Severna Park), sophomores Melissa Montefusco (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and Erin Curtis (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen), and freshmen Suzanne Raffaele (Springfield, Pa./Archmere Academy) and Nicole Kallis (Stevensville, Md./St. Mary's) were chosen to the all-league team as selected by the league's head coaches.
Raffaele, an attacker, tied for the t4eam lead in goals with 35 this season, including 15 in league action. Only a freshman, she scored six of the team's seven goals in a win over Drexel and recorded at least three on five other occasions. Her 35 goals is tied for the eigth best season total in BU history. She was ninth in the league in overall scoring. In addition, Raffaele, garnered Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors. She is the second player in Bison history to win top rookie honors, joining Amy Green who accomplished the feat in 1994. "Suzanne's performance all year was deserving of this honor. She really stepped up and did not play like a freshman. We didn't have a powerful offense, so it was essential that she did not hold back. She is a hard worker who worked to improve her skills all year, including getting extra work after practice. It's nice that all her hard work paid off," said head coach Barb Jordan.
Evans, an attacker, finished the season with 35 goals and seven assists for a career high 42 points. She led the Bison in points and was tied for the team lead in goals. Her 35 goals is tied for the eigth best season total in BU history, while her 42 points ties her for 11th. Her overall points per game total of 3.23 was good enough for fifth in the league. Twice this season she tallied six goals.
Montefusco, a midfielder, garnered all-league honors thanks to her distribution of the ball and her defensive skills. Her 18 handouts were second in the league and the third best season total ever at Bucknell. Her seven league assists were tied for first in the league. Montefusco led the team in ground balls with 42 and was the team's draw specialist.
Curtis was BU's top defender, often being assigned the responsibility of stopping the opposing team's number one offensive player. Her 32 ground balls were fourth best on the team.
Kallis was one of the leagues top goaltenders, recording a 9.77 goals against average and a league leading .624 save percentage. She made 174 saves while allowing a paltry 105 goals. Kallis stepped in for the injured junior Annie Richards (Pt. Pleasant, N.J./Lawrenceville) and performed extremely well for Coach Jordan and the Bison.
Bucknell finished the 2000 season 6-7 overall and 2-3 in the Patriot League.
