COLLEGE MEN'S SOCCER - Bucknell 1, Army 0 (OT)
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman Patrick Glennon (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) scored the only goal of the game 1:30 into overtime as the Bucknell men's soccer team defeated Army in Patriot League action on Saturday, September 30.
With the win, the Bison improve to 5-4-1 on the season and 3-0 in the Patriot League. It is the first time since 1994 that a Bucknell team has had three wins in league action, and only the third time since the league's inception in 1990. No Bucknell men's soccer squad has opened the conference ledger 3-0 before this season.
Bucknell and Army battled to a scoreless tie to end regulation. The Orange and Blue had several opportunities to score in the second half of competition, but the Black Knight goalkeeper Kevin Larrabee made key stops during the stanza to keep Army in the game. Just 1:30 into the extra session, however, Larrabee came out of the net to defend and Glennon took advantage of the one on one situation to net the first goal of his collegiate career.
BU freshman goalkeeper Steve Whitaker (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) made three saves in the game for the Bison, in the process recording his fourth shutout in five games. Whitaker and the Orange and Blue defense have not allowed a goal in over 304 minutes of play. The Bucknell squad now has three consecutive shutouts to go with a five-game unbeaten streak.
"Our goal is to make it to the Patriot League playoffs," said Bucknell head coach Brendan Nash. "If our defense continues to play the way it has been, we should get there. We didn't play great offensively today, but the defense kept us in it."
The Bison, now 3-0-1 in overtime games this season, host Philadelphia University on Tuesday, October 3, for a non-conference game at 7:00 p.m. Army falls to 3-6-1 overall and 1-1 in Patriot League play.
