Lewisburg Pa. --- The Bucknell women's soccer team
played a tough squad from the University of Pennsylvania this
evening on the Bucknell East Field. Despite holding the Quakers
to only one tally in the contest, the Orange and Blue were unable
to find the back of the net, losing a tough one 1-0. This is
the first shutout that the team has suffered in five losses this
season.
The only goal of the game came at the 23:12 mark when senior
Aidan Viggiano (Middletown, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) kept a Pennsylvania
corner kick alive in front of the goal that eventual ended up
on the foot of sophomore Heather Taylor (East Northport, N.Y./Northport).
Taylor proceeded to push the ball past the Bucknell goalkeeper
into the net for the first goal of the game and the eventual game-winner.
The tally was her fourth of the season through eight games.
Both goalkeepers played solid games in the crease. Earning
the shutout for the Quakers was freshman goalkeeper Vanessa Scotto
(Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley). Sophomore netminder Laurie
Purse (Traverse City, Mich./Western Reserve Academy) played
another solid game for the Orange and Blue only allowing the one
goal through 90 minutes while making four saves.
The women's soccer team is now 6-5 on the season and remains 2-1 in conference play. With the victory, Pennsylvania improves to 5-3 on the season. The Orange and Blue will play again this Saturday, October 7 when they play a league contest against Holy Cross at 1:00 p.m. on the Bucknell East Field.
