A two-time basketball co-captain, Joe Steiner held school game (41), season (506) and career (1200) scoring records upon graduation. His season average of 22.0 points per game in 1960-61 remained the school record more than a half-century later. He was an All-East and All-Middle Atlantic Conference selection in 1961 and was a member of the All-Pennsylvania second team in 1961 and third team in 1962. The No. 2 career rebounder when he graduated, Steiner twice scored 40 or more points in a game and graduated with 10 school records. The native of Punxsutawney High School, Steiner later achieved the rank of major in the United States Air Force.Â
