Peter O'Keeffe co-captained the 1971-72 Bucknell swimming team and is one of only two University Division All-Americans in Bucknell swimming history. Winner of the 200-yard freestyle at the Middle Atlantic Conference University Division Championships for three straight years, O'Keeffe also won three other MAC freestyle titles, was on five relay teams that won MAC gold medals, held or shared eight school records, and starred on teams that had a combined 25-9 dual record and won two MAC team titles. In addition to earning All-America honors in the 100-yard backstroke at the NCAA Championships in 1971, he placed in the top nine in the backstroke races at the Eastern Championships five times, including a second and third in 1971. At graduation he was co-winner of the Christy Mathewson Award as the top senior athlete. A graduate of The Albany (N.Y.) Academy, O'Keeffe continued to swim competitively beyond his college years and won several national championships in the U.S. Masters Program in the 1980s, including record-setting performances in the 100 and 200-meter backstroke.
