Harvey Smith was captain of the 1893 Bucknell football team and 1892 and 1893 baseball teams. He later played third base for the Washington Senators in the American League. A three-year letterman in baseball and football, Smith is credited with having "discovered" Christy Mathewson while playing in an alumni baseball game on campus in 1899. He played on Bucknell football teams that were student-coached and had a combined record of 12-7-1. The founder and president of the Harrisburg (Pa.) Athletic Club, Smith was honored in 1961 by the Harrisburg Elks Lodge as "the one person who contributed the most to sports in Harrisburg during the first half of the 20th Century." A graduate of the Medical School of the University of Pennsylvania, Smith served on Bucknell's Board of Trustees from 1929-59 and received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Bucknell in 1924. A physician-surgeon who was a leader in the Pennsylvania Division of the American Cancer Society and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, "Dr. Harvey" died in 1962.
