Erle "Tip" Topham played four years of varsity football and baseball for Bucknell, was captain of the 1914 football squad, and was one of the school's finest punters and passers. As a freshman, Topham was responsible for Bucknell's only points in a 20-2 loss at West Point when his 75-yard punt resulted in an Army player being tackled in the end zone. According to accounts of the game, the play resulted in a five-minute ovation from the cadets in the stands. During World War I, he played on the U.S. Eastern Service Divisional Championship team coached by Jock Sutherland, who called Topham, "one of the greatest players I have ever coached." Topham also played professional baseball briefly with the Pittsburgh Pirates.Â
