A 2001 graduate of Williams College and a seven-year college coaching veteran, Heather Barney joined the Bison coaching staff in the summer of 2012. In her first season (2013) at Bucknell, she led the varsity four to Patriot League gold, Dad Vail silver and Knecht Cup silver medals, resulting in the most successful season for the Bison varsity four in recent memory.
Just prior to arriving at Bucknell, Barney spent four years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Georgetown. She was an integral part of a coaching staff that helped the Hoyas improve from seventh place to second place at the Big East Championships. Barney oversaw all aspects of the fall novice program and was responsible for on-going communication with more than 500 prospective student-athletes. On-water coaching highlights included Georgetown's first ever openweight gold medal at the Eastern Sprints for the 2009 novice four, and a bronze medal at the 2011 BIG EAST Championships for the second varsity eight.
Prior to her time at Georgetown, Barney spent two years as an assistant coach at her alma mater. There, she directed recruiting and novice development for the No. 1-ranked Division III team in the country. She recruited half of Williams' 2010 and 2011 NCAA Championship squads. On the water, her 2007 novice eight enjoyed an undefeated regular season, capped by a silver medal at the New England Championships. In 2006, her third varsity eight won gold at the ECAC National Invitational Collegiate Regatta.
Barney has also spent time as an open sculling coach for the Potomac Boat Club (2011-12) and as the freshman rowing coach for the National Cathedral School (spring 2012).
While a student-athlete at Williams, Barney competed at the 2000 and 2001 NCAA Women's Rowing Championships and was a CRCA National Scholar-Athlete those same years. She was a team captain as a senior, and rowed bow seat in the fastest Division III crew in the country her junior and senior years, earning back-to-back gold medals in the varsity eight at the New England Championships and the ECAC National Invitational Collegiate Regatta.
Barney earned a bachelor's degree from Williams in economics and history with honors. She is currently working towards a master's degree in coaching and athletic administration through Concordia University.
