Bison Fall Short in 20-7 Loss to Penn

LEWISBURG, Pa. — Bucknell football fell to Penn 20-7 on Saturday afternoon in its Family Weekend game. The lone score for the Bison came from a Nate Olson pick-six that was caused by a quarterback hurry from England Allen in the second quarter. The Bison fell to 1-3 overall, while the Quakers opened their season 1-0.
Chris Dietrich started the game at the quarterback position for Bucknell and went 3-for-9 for eight yards and a sack. Emmett Dowling took over for the second half in his first collegiate game and went 8-for-21 for 76 yards and one interception.
Bucknell's defense had some nice plays throughout the game to keep the Bison in it. Nick Hoying led the pack in tackles with 11 total including five solo and six assisted. Brandon Biagiarelli and Lucas Rost followed behind with eight each. Shane Hulmes recorded seven tackles and the lone sack for the Bison defense. Bucknell's defense also saw three pass breakups, two tackles for loss and five quarterback hurries. England Allen accounted for two of the hurries, one of which led to the pick-six.
On the offensive side, the Bison put together 124 yards of offense to Penn's 367 yards. Stauffer led the Bison in rushing with 11 carries for 32 yards. Sam Milligan led the receivers with 3 catches for 43 yards.
Penn's quarterback Miles Teodecki led the group in rushing with 13 carries for 93 yards and a touchdown. He threw 18-for-34 with an interception that resulted in a pick-six. Luke Johnson led the Quakers receivers with six catches for 75 yards.
The first quarter was all Penn as it took a 14-0 lead while keeping the Bison offense quiet. Nate Olson got the Bison on the board first in the second quarter as he recorded a 77-yard pick-six, the first pick-six since 2024, when Aaron Davis got a 79-yard pick-six against Lehigh. The defensive score marked the first time this season the Bison have scored points in the first half.
The third quarter saw another Penn touchdown followed up by a blocked extra point for Bucknell that Biagiarelli returned to the Bucknell 21-yardline, just a bit short of converting it into points. Penn took a 20-7 lead into the final 15 minutes of play, which would hold and earn them the win.
The game opened up with three total scoreless drives, including quick three and outs for each team to open the game, as both defenses stood tall. Penn got on the board first after a 36-yard rush from Miles Teodecki opened up their offense. The drive culminated in a Teodecki one-yard rushing touchdown, the first of his career, to put Penn up 7-0.
After forcing Bucknell to go three-and-out once again, Penn got good field position and capitalized as Teodecki found Mason Page for a 37-yard deep ball touchdown reception, extending the Quaker's lead to 14 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter began with Penn driving down the field. On a 2nd and 2 play at the Bucknell 26-yardline, Nate Olson jumped a Teodecki pass for a 77-yard pick-six to close Bucknell's gap to just seven with 10:12 remaining in the first half.
Penn then put together a 16-play, 55-yard drive that ended with a 27-yard field goal attempt that went wide right. On the drive, Lucas Rost had a quarterback hurry on 2nd and 7 before Teodecki threw one into the endzone that went incomplete forcing the field goal attempt. The final 3:23 of the first half went scoreless with multiple three-and-outs per team.
The second half opened with almost 12 minutes of scoreless play with four combined three-and-outs between the two teams. Penn opened the gates with 3:20 left in the third as Teodecki found Barone for a 10-yard touchdown reception. Brandon Biagiarelli blocked the extra point, but the return came up short as he was tripped up at the Bucknell 21-yardline.
The Bison offense then took the field, but on a 3rd and 7 play on the Bucknell 28-yardline, Emmett Dowling, who was seeing collegiate playing time for the first time in the second half, threw an interception to Penn's Luke McIlhon. The Bison defense then came up with a huge stop as Penn went for it on a 4th and goal play. England Allen put his body on the line and forced Teodecki to fumble the ball into the endzone, resulting in a touchback for the Bison early in the 4th quarter.
The Bison then drove down the field to the Penn 28-yardline and Michael Cadden found his way into the endzone, but it was brought back due to an offensive holding call. The Bison attempted two fourth down plays on the drive with one being successful. On 4th and 12 at the Penn 23-yardline, Bucknell was unable to convert as Dowling was hurried by Raashed Hall and threw an incomplete pass.
The remainder of the game went back and forth, but scoreless as Penn earned a win to open its season.
The Bison will take the road next weekend as they face Pitt at Arcisure Stadium on Saturday, Sep. 26 at noon.
