Bison Women Place Sixth at the Spiked Shoe Invitational

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- Bucknell women's cross country (1-0) tested itself against some of the best teams in the East while shorthanded on Friday morning at Penn State's Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational. The Bison women finished sixth out of nine teams. Junior captain Katie Moncavage paced the Orange & Blue with a 23rd-place finish.

"Although we were missing two of our better runners for health reasons, I felt our ladies were pretty solid," head coach Kevin Donner said. "They handled the 6k course pretty well, but there is plenty of room for improvement. We will go into a nice three-week-training block without racing to get ready for the Paul Short Run at Lehigh."
With Shaelan McNally and Kailey Granger sidelined, Moncavage stepped up as Bucknell's ace harrier and delivered a remarkable performance on the lengthy course, clocking 21:39.4. She started in the 40s after the first checkpoint of 1200 meters, moved to 33rd by 3100 meters before delivering a strong closing kick.
"I'm proud of my performance," Moncavage said. "I feel like I did really well off the start. I got a good position and then I kind of just kept my pace. Kerry and I worked together for a while, which really helped. I ended up getting into a pretty good rhythm and then I just tried to hold out as long as possible and I'm glad I was able to hold it up the long hills."
Kerry O'Day, who tied with Granger for first at last weekend's dual with Lafayette, posted another impressive performance, logging 22:07.4 to finish 39th. O'Day, whose 2025 cross country season was hampered by injuries, has added another strong performance to Bucknell's early-season efforts.
Sophomore Gentry Bowie submitted her claim as one of Bucknell's top five harriers, placing 45th on a time of 22:15.0. The second-year runner improved her standing throughout the race, displaying remarkable stamina against one of the region's toughest courses.Â
Bradley Weldon slotted 51st on a time of 22:20.5. Weldon ranked 51st at the 1200-meter checkpoint and fluctuated slightly throughout the race before ultimately finishing where she started. Weldon finished 153rd at the 2024 edition of the Spiked Shoe Invitational.Â
Madeline Kerr rounded out the Bison scoring effort, finishing 53rd, clocking 22:27.9. The sophomore runner sat 69th after 3100 meters but found extra horsepower to move up 16 spots.Â
Syracuse won the race, followed by Penn State, Pittsburgh, Monmouth, Maryland, Bucknell, Saint Joseph's, American, and Buffalo.Â
Bucknell will enter a three-week training block before returning to action at Lehigh's Paul Short Run on Oct. 2.
