LEWISBURG, Pa.- Dillon Bechtold and Myles Takats made Bucknell Wrestling history at the EIWA Championships on Saturday. The two grapplers earned the program's first titles in their respective classes unlocking the inaugural two crown performance in Bucknell history at the conference championships. The distinction earned the dynamic duo a Co-Bison of the Week, as decided Monday by the Bucknell Athletics Department. They also punched automatic tickets to the NCAA National Championships on March 19-21.Â
"Well-deserved honor for both Dillon and Myles," said head coach Dan Wirnsberger. "They made history for the program as we never have had two champions in the same year. These guys are fantastic competitors and prepare very well. They both will take this momentum and plan to make even more history at the NCAA Tournament. I'm happy for these two guys as they are great examples for the rest of the team."
Bechtold dominated the 197-pound weight class. The sophomore entered as the number one seed and he proved why the designation was correct. He opened his championship run in the quarterfinals with a devastating efficient 18-3 tech fall over eighth-seeded RJ Moore (Franklin & Marshall), recorded in four minutes and 30 seconds. He followed up with a 5-1 decision over fourth-seeded and No. 31 Zyan Hall (Navy) in the semifinals. Bechtold scored all five points in the final period after trailing 1-0 after two rounds. The Bison grappler faced second-seeded and No. 28 Mikey Squires (Binghamton) in the finals. An escape and takedown combo in the second period carried the day in a 4-0 victory.Â
Takats followed the same path to the 174-pound crown as Bechtold, earning a tech fall and two decisions. His championship drive began in the quarterfinals versus eighth-seeded Richie Grungo (Lehigh). Takats dispatched the Mountain Hawk with a 17-2 tech fall in just under six minutes. He faced Army's Andrew Christie, seeded fifth, in the semifinals, and like Bechtold, trailed 1-0 entering the final period. Takats did not panic and tied the bout with an escape point. He grabbed a takedown with a scant 23 seconds left and riding time earned him another ducat for a 5-1 win. A formindable opponent in second-seeded and No. 19 Carter Baer (Binghamton) awaited him in the finals. Takats had already defeated Baer this season at the Navy Classic and the Bearcat craved revenge. The two each notched an escape point before Takats scored another third period takedown. Baer escaped from additional danger but couldn't land an evening blow. Takats added riding time for the 5-2 victory.Â
Bechtold and Takats will be joined by Dylan Chappell (141) and Noah Mulvaney (165) in Cleveland for the National Championships!
