LEWISBURG, Pa. – Aidan Kehoe recorded 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead Patriot League-leading Navy to a 76-60 win over Bucknell on Monday night at Sojka Pavilion. Achile Spadone led the Bison with 14 points, five rebounds, and five steals, but the hosts could not overcome a 6-for-32 showing from 3-point range and a 45-28 rebounding disparity.
Pat Curtin also scored 14 points, Amon Dörries had 13 points and seven rebounds, and Jayden Williams tallied 12 points and four assists for the Bison, who fell to 5-8 in the Patriot League after falling to the top two teams in the league – Navy and Colgate – in a span of 48 hours.
Navy (20-6, 12-1 PL) won its eighth game in a row and 16th of 17 since the start of December. Kehoe, who is leading the nation in field-goal percentage at 74.5 percent coming in, went 11-for-16 in this one and added five assists, three steals, and two blocks. Seven of his rebounds came at the offensive end, where the Midshipmen built a 17-9 edge in second-chance points. Jinwoo Kim followed with 18 points, and Donovan Draper had 14 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
Bucknell generated a number of open 3-pointers throughout the game but just could not get much to drop. The Bison scored on their first two possessions of the night and led 6-4 after a Dörries layup, but Navy answered with a 10-2 run and held the advantage the rest of the way.
The Midshipmen stretched an 11-point halftime lead to 16 with a 7-0 run early in the second stanza, but Bucknell followed with its best stretch of the night. Patrick O'Brien, who made his first career start, hit a 3-pointer and Spadone put back a miss to cap a 9-0 run that cut the deficit to seven at 42-35.
After a Navy timeout, the Bison got a stop but missed a 3-pointer that would have cut it to four. That started an 0-for-4 stretch, and Navy scored three straight layups to shove the gap back into double digits at 48-35. Kehoe had three buckets in what became a decisive 11-2 run, and the Mids would go on to lead by as many as 21.
The highlight of the night for the Bison came at the midway mark of the second half when Spadone chased down Kim on a breakaway and blocked his shot. The Bison rushed the ball back up the court and Quin Berger found a trailing O'Brien for a dunk.
Navy shot 53.8 percent in the second half and 48.3 percent in the game. The Midshipmen went 4-for-14 from the 3-point arc – Kim was 3-for-4 and the rest of the team 1-for-10 – and 14-for-18 from the foul line. Bucknell finished at 36.5 percent overall and 8-for-8 from the foul line.
Bucknell had 10 steals from Navy's 13 turnovers, led by Spadone with career-high-tying five. The Bison turned it over 11 times, eight coming in the first half.
After playing three games in the last five days, Bucknell will now have some extra rest before traveling to Boston University on Saturday afternoon.
