LEWISBURG, Pa. – Collin Sullivan's ninth-minute goal opened the scoring, and Jack Lucas doubled the lead after 20 minutes as the Bucknell men's soccer team kept a 2-0 shutout over second-place Lehigh on Saturday night at Emmitt Field.
Bucknell (6-6-1, 3-2-1 PL) jumped Lafayette to take sole possession of third place in the Patriot League standings at 10 points, and Lehigh (4-5-5, 4-1-1), remains in second place with 13 points.
"It was a really good first half by the guys and a strong effort in the second half," said head coach Dave Brandt. "I would have liked to be a little better, but it was an important three points tonight."
The Bison won an early corner in the match, and David Krumov's service found the head of Sullivan at the back post for a 1-0 lead. It was Sullivan's second career goal and first of the season, while Krumov notched his second assist in as many matches.
"Collin is very strong in the air and he's strong defensively," said Brandt. "We just haven't unlocked much for ourselves in terms of corners, but tonight's a good start."
Lucas then buried a free kick 11 minutes later to put the Bison up 2-0 in the 20th minute. His effort was nearly saved by Anton Kinnunen, but the ball snuck past the reigning Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week.
Bucknell played a strong first half, holding Lehigh to just two shots off target in the half. Bucknell had six shots in the half with four on target.
Roskos nearly made it 3-0 in the 30th minute of action off a great string of passes. The forward slid to take the shot, but Kinnunen just tipped the shot over the crossbar.
The Mountain Hawks came out of the half with plenty of attacking pressure, forcing the Bison to hold strong defensively early in the half. Yerbury made a brilliant diving save to his right just six minutes into the half, and the Bison then blocked four shots over the next five minutes of play.
"We left it at 2-0 and Lehigh had a lot of life in the second half," said Brandt. "We put ourselves in a situation where we had to be good defensively, and we were solid. We'd like to put the match away, but it was a great effort defensively."
Yerbury made four saves in the match including big stops in the 83rd and 85th minutes for his third consecutive clean sheet and fifth of the season. Lehigh's best opportunity of the match came in the 89th minute. A service into the box caused a chaotic scramble in front of goal. The ball fell to Shea Coughlin, who fired his shot well over the bar.
Bucknell is back in action on Tuesday at Emmitt Field to cap off a four-match home stand against No. 21 Cornell at 7 p.m. The Bison then go on the road to take on Army next Saturday in West Point.
