LEWISBURG, Pa. – Drew Roskos found the match-winner for the second straight game to help the Bucknell men's soccer team secure three points in a 1-0 victory over Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon at Emmitt Field.
After a match-winning header against Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday, Roskos replicated that again with a brilliant header in the 64th minute for the game's first goal.
David Krumov and Jack Lucas linked up on the wing until space for a cross opened up. Krumov curled in the service to an unmarked Roskos, who guided the header perfectly for the lead.
Bucknell dropped each of their previous two league matches but bounced back with a win to move to seven points in the Patriot League. The Bison are now tied on points in fourth with American, behind Boston (15), Lehigh (13) and Lafayette (8).
"Every Patriot League game is a battle and it's a big challenge," said head coach Dave Brandt. "We put ourselves in a spot where we needed three points, so that was critical."
The match remained close throughout the 90 minutes, but Bucknell had plenty of opportunities to score with eight shots on target including seven in the first half. Holy Cross had 15 shots in the game with three on target. Thomas Yerbury stopped all three chances, including a save from point-blank range in the 71st minute to keep the Bison in front.
Bucknell dominated the first 45 minutes with many chances, but goalkeeper John Smith made seven first-half saves to keep the match scoreless at the break.
The Bison threatened early on in the match, and Smith was forced to make two comfortable saves from Lucas and Viktor Permyashkin in the first three minutes. The Crusaders then forced Yerbury to make an easy save on the other end just three minutes later.
Nate Coughlin created Bucknell's two best opportunities of the half, but Smith came up big again for two more saves. Coughlin beat a defender on the dribble and played Roskos in on the wing. Roskos found Coughlin in the box on a great pass, but Smith closed the gap to deny the chance. Coughlin then got in behind on a 1-on-1 opportunity 10 minutes later, but his chance was denied again by Smith.
"We need to finish more and that can change games," said Brandt. "That's been an issue for us. Really glad for Drew to get that goal and he had two more good chances in the second half. We just need to keep fighting that battle and the guys are doing their best, but we need to put the ball away."
Roskos' goal was Bucknell's only shot on target despite a few more opportunities on the attack. Lucas had a chance early in the half, but his effort went just wide of goal. Roskos nearly doubled the lead after his first goal, hitting the post in the 85th minute.
Yerbury's biggest moment came in the 71st minute of play as the Bison shut down two shots right in front of goal. On a long throw, Kyle Martell took and initial shot that was blocked by Lucas. The ball fell to Jack Fiedler, but Yerbury denied the chot at the near post.Â
Holy Cross forward Archie Hatcher registered just two shots in the match with none on target. Hatcher entered the match as the nation's leader in shots per game. Hatcher also ranked third in shots on goal per game.
"Holy Cross is hard to play against because the ball is in behind you before you know it," said Brandt. "That's what they do and they're good at it. Their whole front three is dangerous in that way and I thought we did a good job handling that."
Bucknell continues Patriot League action next Saturday as Lehigh comes to town for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Emmitt Field.
