WASHINGTON, D.C. — Turnovers plagued the Bison as Bucknell football fell to Georgetown in D.C. 21-14 on Saturday. In a seemingly even matchup, turnovers proved to be the difference as the Hoyas were able to force three to Bucknell's one. Despite already giving up two turnovers, Bucknell had a chance to tie the game in the final three minutes, but the final interception by Wednar Cadet secured the win for the Hoyas.
Bucknell fell to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the Patriot League with the loss, while Georgetown earned its first win of the season and moved to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the Patriot League.
The first half of the game saw the most offensive production for both teams as each put up two touchdowns. Bucknell never went down in the half, but each time it scored, Georgetown was able to respond. The Bison had a chance to go up before the half, but in the final seconds, the Hoyas came up with a key interception in the end zone to head into the locker room with a tie game. In the third quarter, Georgetown took its lone lead of the game with a touchdown that would end up being the game-winner.
Emmett Dowling once again got the nod at quarterback for the Bison. He ended the game 17-for-22 for 173 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Dowling's lone touchdown pass was the first of his career. Chad Martin, the target for Dowling's touchdown pass, also secured his first career touchdown and ended the game with three catches for 24 yards. TJ Cadden led the receiving corps with five catches for 77 yards. The running backs were led by Michael Cadden who had 11 carries for 59 yards and a touchdown.
The Bison defense was led in tackles by Lucas Rost who had nine total tackles including four solo tackles and one tackle for loss. Zack Corna had the lone turnover for Bucknell with his interception in the second quarter.
The Bison won the toss and elected to defer. Georgetown took the ball down to the Bucknell 21-yard line with eight plays, but Shane Hulmes came up with a major stop on 4th and 2, to give Bucknell's offense the chance to strike first.
The Bison offense fed off of the defensive momentum and put together a couple of 10+ yard plays with receptions from TJ Cadden and rushing from Michael Cadden and Jerry Harrison. On a second and goal play, Dowling found Chad Martin in the end zone for each of the pair's first collegiate score. Juan Garanton knocked in the extra point to give the Bison a 7-0 lead with 7:17 left to play.
The Hoyas answered with a 10-play, 78-yard scoring drive that culminated in a one-yard rushing touchdown for Jayden Sumpter with 2:46 left in the first quarter. Beard threw successfully on the drive, extending his overall completion rate to 8-for-10 for 58 yards.
Bucknell then went three-and-out and Georgetown began to drive down the field once again. The Bison defense forced a 3rd and 10 play at the Bucknell 45-yard line and Zach Corna was able to jump Beard's pass for an interception. The offense for the second time in the game fed off of the defense's big play with a 5-play, 40-yard touchdown drive. Dowling ran for eight yards on third down and the Bison went for it on 4th and 1 with a Michael Cadden route that went in for a 25-yard rushing touchdown.
Georgetown then got the ball back and ran down the throats of the Bison with 71 rushing yards, including a 31-yard rushing touchdown for Clay Ash. The Hoyas' game-tying drive was 11 plays for 75 yards and ran the clock down to 4:53 left in the half.
The Bison then put together 10 plays for 69 yards and made it to the Georgetown 1-yard line to give them a chance to take the lead at the end of the first half, but Cadet picked off Dowling's rushed pass to the end zone to keep the game tied at halftime.
After the first 14:30 of the third quarter went scoreless with each defense making adjustments at the half, Georgetown found its first lead of the game on a five play, 62-yard scoring drive that ended in Ash's second rushing touchdown of the day, this time for 21 yards.
The Bison drove down the field to the Georgetown 32-yard line before being put in a 4th and 8 situation. Bucknell went for it and due to a holding call on the Hoyas, the Bison earned the first down. Jack Sullivan then fumbled the ball on a rush and Georgetown recovered it at it's own 30-yard line. Georgetown was then held to a 32-yard field goal attempt by the Bison defense, which Thomas Anderson missed wide left.
The defenses from both teams then held strong as both were forced to punt back-to-back. With 3:02 left in regulation, the Bison offense took over at their own 30-yard line after interference was called on the Hoyas. The Bison got down to their own 42-yard line, but Dowling then overthrew his receiver and Cadet got his second interception of the game to secure the win for Georgetown.
Bucknell will next host Lafayette at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 3 p.m.
