Women's Basketball Falls to Navy on Wednesday Night

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's basketball team fell to Navy 77-51 on Wednesday evening at Sojka Pavilion. Bucknell held an 18-17 advantage after the first quarter, but Navy took over for the remainder of the game, out-scoring the Bison 60-33 over the remaining three quarters.
Tuana Coskun led the Bison with nine points in the game. Reese Zemitis, making her first start in just over a month, had eight points in the game and added six rebounds. Freshman Mariah Hardy had eight points on 3-of-7 shooting from the field.
Bucknell (4-10, 0-3 PL) shot 32.1 percent from the field and 16 percent from behind the arc. Navy (8-6, 2-1 PL) shot 45.5 percent from the field and drained 8-of-24 three-pointers. The Mids out-rebounded the Bison 48-25 including 15 offensive rebounds for 19 second-chance points.
Navy's Zoe Mesuch led all scorers with 15 points and Quinn Boettinger was close behind with 13 points. Zanai Barnett-Gay had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds for the guard. She also added seven assists to her totals.
It was a back-and-forth first quarter to kick off the game. Both teams struggled to get shots to fall early on as Navy held an 8-4 lead after 4:30 of play. Tuana Coskun then buried a three to score Bucknell's first seven points of the game, and the shots started to fall from there. Isabella Casey quickly scored the next basket for a 9-8 lead and both teams traded scores for the remainder of the quarter. Zemitis drilled a big three to give the Bison a 12-10 lead. The Bison continued to retake the lead as freshmen Kaila Richards and Mariah Hardy each made tough baskets to help the Bison to an 18-17 advantage after the quarter.
Navy came out of the gate with six quick points to start the second quarter to take a 25-18 lead. Hope Masonius cut the deficit to five points but another 9-0 run with six straight points from Navy's Quinn Boettinger extended the lead and it was all Navy to finish out the half with a 38-24 lead. The Mids shot 10-for-20 from the field while the Bison went 3-for-16 and 0-for-8 from three-point range in the quarter. Navy out-rebounded the Bison 16-6 in the frame including six offensive rebounds for 15 second-chance points.
The Mids' momentum continued into the second half with a 13-0 start to push the lead to 51-24. Zemitis then ended a five-minute scoring drought for the Bison with a three to spark a 7-2 run for the Bison to make it a 57-33 score. The Mids answered with the final five points of the quarter to erase Bucknell's run a hold a 62-33 lead heading into the final quarter.
Masonius and Hardy got the fourth quarter started with four points but Navy continued to stack points with another run for seven straight points. Navy continued to hold its big lead, seeing out the game to a 77-51 finish.
Bucknell is back in action on Saturday as the Bison travel to Loyola Maryland for a 2 p.m. tip off at Reitz Arena.
