Postgame with Coach John Griffin, Amon Dörries, Achile Spadone:
LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Amon Dörries scored a career-high 36 points, breaking Bucknell's 48-year old freshman scoring record, as the Bison defeated Boston University 103-97 in double overtime on Saturday afternoon at Sojka Pavilion. Bucknell Athletics Hall- of-Famer member Al Leslie has held the rookie record since 1978, when he scored 31 points against Rider. Achile Spadone (24 points) and Pat Curtin (22 points) also helped carry the offensive load for the Bison, who improved to 7-16 overall and 4-6 in Patriot League play.
The Terriers (8-15, 3-7 PL) also had a huge freshman performance as Chance Gladden scored a team-high 34 points, 20 coming after the end of regulation, as the two teams traded jabs throughout the extra sessions. Both teams are shorthanded due to injury, and Boston University used only seven players and Bucknell eight in the 50-minute game. Still, both teams were terrific offensively down the stretch.
The game was tied at 67 at the end of regulation, and then the Bison outscored the Terriers 36-30 across the two five-minute overtime periods. Bucknell made 11 of its 15 overtime field goal attempts and 11 of 13 free throws. The 22 points in the second OT session were three shy of the school record for an extra period.
Dörries' 36 points set a new Sojka Pavilion single-game scoring record for a Bucknell player. Andrew Funk scored 34 points against Loyola in 2022. Curtin added 10 rebounds, securing his first career double-double, while Jayden Williams played all but 33 seconds of the 50-minute contest, handing out eight assists without committing a turnover, while scoring seven points and grabbing five rebounds.
The game had ebbs and flows throughout, and there were 17 lead changes and 13 ties in the contest. Nine of those lead changes came in the first 10 minutes before Bucknell made the game's first sustained run, a 7-0 spurt to snap a 16-16 tie.
The Bison led 32-28 at the half and then ran the margin up to 12 after Dörries made two 3-pointers in a row, the latter giving the Bison a 58-46 lead with 10:35 remaining. But Dörries was called for his fourth foul defending fellow German center Ben Defty on a post entry, and the call changed the game. Bucknell made only one more field goal for nearly seven minutes, and the Terriers, who entered the game ranked 21st nationally in 3-point percentage (.380), hit three in a row as part of a 17-2 run that flipped the scoreboard.
The Bison hung in there in the closing minutes, and Dörries, who never did pick up his fifth foul, made two critical free throws and then a game-tying scoop shot around Defty with 32 seconds left. The Bison came up with a big defensive stop to force overtime for a second straight home game.
Both teams scored on nearly every possession in the first overtime period, with Gladden scoring Boston University's first 12 points in the session. Dörries had eight in the period for the Bison, and he drew Defty's fifth foul at the 3:31 mark.
Curtin's pull-up jumper tied the game at 79 at the 1:35 mark, and then Williams came up with one of the biggest defensive plays of the game when he blocked Gladden's shot on a drive and forced a held ball. Dörries scored with a tough running hook shot at the other end, but after the Bison could not secure a loose ball on the defensive glass, Michael McNair drove for a layup to tie the game at 81-81 with 28 seconds remaining.
Bucknell ran a nice set on the final possession, with Curtin drawing a defender in the lane and finding a cutting Aleksander Pachucki, but with the clock about to expire, his quick shot was a bit strong off the glass.
The Bison trailed 85-83 after a McNair jumper in the second overtime period, and then they got hot from downtown. Pachucki swished one from the top of the key, Dörries hit a three from the left corner to break the freshman scoring record, and then after Sam Hughes scored for the Terriers, Curtin hit a third straight triple. After a Hughes miss, Curtin drove through contact for a bucket plus a foul. The free throw was short, but the Bison suddenly had a 94-87 lead.
The Terriers pulled within four on an Azmar Abdullah 3-pointer, but the Bison handled the full-court pressure well and went 7-for-8 from the foul line in the final 50 seconds to snap a nagging four-game losing streak. The three previous losses were all decided in the final seconds.
Dörries' 36 points were the most by a Bison since Funk logged 38 at Illinois State in 2021-22. The freshman combo of Dörries and Curtin combined for 58 points, and the Dörries/Curtin/Spadone trifecta combined for 82 of the team's 103.
Spadone's 24 is a new career high, surpassing his 22-point effort at Radford last season. He finished 7-for-12 from the field, 4-for-5 from three, and 6-for-6 from the foul line. Dorries also hit four 3-pointers, a new career-best for him, and went 11-for-19 overall and a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe.
After shooting under 40 percent in the first half, Bucknell rallied to finish the game at 51.6 percent, including a red-hot 11-for-22 from downtown and 28-for-33 from the foul line. Boston University finished at 45.6 percent from the field, 11-for-31 from deep, and 24-for-29 from the foul line.
Gladden himself went 17-for-18 from the line on the way to a career-high 34 points, which were four shy of John Holland's Boston University freshman record. Hughes added 22 points, McNair finished with 19, and Defty tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Bison turned the ball over only once in the first half – on the first offensive possession of the game – and only eight times all day. The Terriers were even better with only seven turnovers.
Bucknell became the first team to score 100 points on the Terriers since Michigan tallied 111 on Jan. 3, 1994.
The Bison now have a challenging week ahead, facing the top three teams in the Patriot League standings in a five-day span. Bucknell visits third-place American on Wednesday and then hosts second-place Colgate next Saturday and first-place Navy the following Monday.
