Colgate Starts Fast, Downs Bucknell Men 95-76 in Hamilton

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Slow starts in both halves doomed Bucknell on the road at Colgate on Saturday afternoon, as the first-place Raiders got a triple-double from Jalen Cox and moved to 5-1 in Patriot League play with a 95-76 victory at Cotterell Court.
Colgate (11-8, 5-1 PL) scored the first 11 points of the game, and after taking that 11-point lead to intermission, the Raiders tallied the first nine of the second period to stretch the lead to 20.
Once again the Bison (6-13, 3-3 PL) were led in scoring by freshmen Pat Curtin and Amon Dörries with 18 and 15 points, respectively. It was the third straight game thue rookie duo finished 1-2 on the team in the points column. Achile Spadone added 13 points and eight rebounds, and Aleksander Pachucki recorded 10 points, four rebounds, and four assists off the bench.
Cox finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists to record Colgate's first triple-double since Tucker Richardson against Lafayette in 2023. Andrew Alekseyenko led the Raiders with 22 points, and Sam Wright (17), Ben Tweedy (14), and Brady Cummins (10) also scored in double figures.
The Bison got out to a frosty start, missing their first nine and 11 of their first 12 shots. Colgate opened the game with 11 straight points, eight of them on Wright layups, and the Raiders led 15-2 before Bucknell started to get going.
Pachucki's 3-pointer from the right wing ignited a 15-4 Bison run over the next four minutes. Dörries had five points in that stretch, and Patrick O'Brien capped the run with a deep 3-pointer that pulled the Bison within 19-17.
Colgate never relinquished the lead, however, as Ayomi Odetoyinbo finished an alley-oop on the next possession to start an 8-4 run. Dörries' layup off a Pat Curtin feed made it a 27-23 game, but Cummins converted a 4-point play, and later in the half Cox scored seven straight Raiders points for a 40-29 lead. Jayden Williams hit from downtown with 55 seconds left in the half before Alekseyenko banked in a three to close out the first-half scoring with Colgate in front 43-32.
The Raiders shot out of the locker room with nine straight points, with Cox's put-back stretching their lead to 52-32. Pachucki's 3-pointer at the 14:11 mark made it 57-39, but Colgate answered with 3-pointers on three straight possessions to open up a commanding 27-point advantage.
Colgate shot 17-for-30 in both halves and finished at 56.7 percent from the field. The Raiders went 12-for-27 from 3-point range and 15-for-22 from the foul line. Bucknell shot 51.9 percent in the second half to get to 43.6 percent for the game. The Bison struggled from long range (6-26) but had a good day at the foul line (22-24). Playing without key frontcourt players Ruot Bijiek and Grgur Brcic, Bucknell was outrebounded 36-24.
Jacob Meachem went 7-for-8 from the line in the second half, and Kellen Welch had a strong finish with a bucket, a rebound, and an assist.
The Bison are 3-0 at home against Patriot League competition this season, and they return to Sojka Pavilion on Wednesday to face Army at 7 p.m.
