LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's golf team shot a 297 and holds a five-stroke team lead after the first round of the Bucknell Invitational on Friday at the par-70 Bucknell Golf Club. Junior Katherine Vice sits in the co-lead after shooting a 72 (+2) for a career-low round.
The Bison lead a field of 17, and their 297 is tied for sixth-best in program history for a single round. Â
Vice is tied with only Duquesne's Katie Forde heading into the second round of Bucknell's home tournament. Vice's 72 is career-low on the scorecard, but her one-over 73 at the YSU Spring Invitational last year is her career-low in relation to par.
Â
Vice played a very clean round with 14 pars and a birdie on hole five. The fifth hole played as the seventh-hardest hole on the course in round one.
Â
Freshman Joelle Johnson is tied for third after posting 73 (+3) in her first round of collegiate golf. Johnson made 13 pars with one birdie on hole number 12 —playing as the fourth-hardest hole after round one.
Â
Sophomore Sophia Bardunias is tied for 12th place, shooting a 75 (+5). Bardunias chipped in on hole number six for a great par save. Katrina von Behren shot a 77 (+7) and is tied for 21st. Junior Nicole Yun carded a 79 (+) as all of Bucknell's top five players broke 80.
Â
Bucknell is sporting two teams in the tournament. Bucknell's second group finished the first day in ninth with a 320.
Â
Freshman Caroline Zeiger impressed with a 77 (+7) and is tied with von Behren in 21st in the individual rankings. Senior Paige Richter carded a 78 (+8) and freshman Darcy Wright shot an 82 (+12) in her collegiate debut. Sophomore Lila Smith turned in an 83 and senior Erin Drahnak carded a 90.
Â
Only four teams remain within seven strokes of the Bison. Holy Cross is in second, posting a 302. Merrimack is in third after a 303 and Saint Francis and Purdue Fort Wayne both ended the round with a 304.
Â
The Bison are back in action for round two tomorrow morning with tee times starting at 9 a.m.
