COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Ben Sheffield's 86th-minute header off of a corner leveled the score 2-2 to erase a two-goal deficit as the Bucknell men's soccer team earned a hard-fought draw against a tough Maryland side in front of 5,000 fans on Friday Night at Ludwig Field.
It was another late goal as Bucknell (2-0-1) scored in the final 15 minutes in each of its first three matches and scored a goal in the final five minutes in each of its last last two matches. The Bison have trailed in all three matches to start the season, coming from behind in each one to stay unbeaten.
The Bison defense remained steady as Maryland (1-0-1) was on the attacking front for most of the second half. Junior defender Kiko Hidalgo found himself in space late in the match and fired a shot that was blocked for a corner. Junior Jack Lucas swung his corner into the six-yard box and Sheffield rose above everybody to head home into the bottom right corner to equalize 2-2.
Maryland quickly took a 2-0 lead with two fantastic goals six minutes apart in the first half. Senior center back Jackson Sullivan scored his first career goal as the captain stepped up to the penalty spot to get the Bison back into the match just before the half. Freshman wing backer Nate Coughlin drove down the wing into a dangerous area in the 36th minute, and drew the penalty before getting off a cross at the end line.
Senior goalkeeper Freddie Lapworth was outstanding, making seven saves on the night. Lapworth made four saves inside the first 18 minutes of the second half, including a penalty save and a big stop on a breakaway. Maryland earned a penalty just three minutes into the half and Leon Koehl, who converted seven penalties last season, stepped up to the spot. Lapworth got to the ground quickly, making the stop with his legs as he dove to his right to keep the Bison within a goal.
Stephane Njike opened the scoring for Maryland in the 23rd minute with a great goal. Njike took the ball inside the box, made a quick touch to his left to beat his man, and drilled his shot into the near post corner past a diving Lapworth.
Maryland quickly doubled the lead with another brilliant goal from Luca Costabile. The midfielder beat a defender on the dribble and carried towards goal, firing a 30-yard shot into the top left corner.
Maryland looked to have extended the lead with a goal from Sadam Masareka in the 73rd minute, but the goal was ruled off after video replay.
Lucas has a point for the Bison in each of the first three matches, and leads the Bison with four points. Sheffield's goal was the fourth of his career as the senior now has 10 career points.
Maryland out-shot Bucknell 16-6 in the match with nine shots on target. The Bison had five shots on target as Hidalgo, senior Cohen Weaver and junior David Krumov all fired shots on net. Maryland goalkeeper Laurin Mack made three saves in the match.
Bucknell is back on the road on Tuesday as the Bison take on George Mason at 7 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.
