PRINCETON, N.J.- Evelyn Bliss stayed fresh for the NCAA First Round with a tune-up victory in the javelin throw at the Princeton Elite Invite on Saturday. Bucknell's sterling javelineer demolished the competition with her fifth straight victory. Fellow javelin thrower Madelyn Hudak also competed.
Results
Bliss already sealed her participation in the NCAA First Round back in late March at the Raleigh Relays. Throwing in this meet was designed to keep the star sophomore loose and ready for Jacksonville and mission accomplished. Bliss's winning toss of 51.63m (169-4) arrived in the third round and handily beat Princeton's Niki Woods, who was throwing on her home course. Woods's best attempt went 46.55m (152-8). Bliss currently sits fourth in the East rankings: 54.32m (178-2) - a mark obtained at the Bison Outdoor Classic.
Hudak started slow with three faults but kept grinding and finished the meet with her best attempt of 39.87m (130-9). That throw obtained sixth place for the earnest sophomore. Hudak's progress this season played a significant role in Bucknell's javelin group ranking eighth nationally. The Portage product finished fourth at the Patriot League Outdoor Championships and ranked tenth in Bucknell's record book for the javelin.
Bliss and fellow javelin thrower Brylee Tereska will compete in the NCAA First Round (May 28-31). Freshman sprinter Alexandra Lea sits 52nd in the 400-meter dash but has a good chance of receiving an invitation. Bliss advanced to the NCAA National Championships last season, finishing 13th and earning All-American status.
