PRINCETON, N.J.- Wade Shomper continued his impressive run in the shot put with his second straight victory in the event. The junior strongman conquered the event at the Princeton Elite Invitational, improving upon his school record and positioning himself for an outside chance at participation in the NCAA First Round. CJ Simbiri also competed in the triple jump.

Shomper did not allow the momentum obtained from winning gold at the Patriot League Outdoor Championships slack. Near the fields where General Washington routed the British in 1777, Shomper channeled that winning spirit with six impressive throws in each round. His finest throw, 17.65m (57-11), arrived like a cavalry charge in the decisive moment - the sixth and last round. Shomper entered the final round trailing Penn's sophomore Kai Deines's 17.32m (56-10) but uncorked his record-breaking toss to grab the victory. The Keystone State product has won six shot put events during this outdoor campaign.Â
His new mark moved him into 52th in the NCAA East rankings. The top 48 receive invitations to the NCAA First Round. Shomper and the Bison will wait to see if injuries and dropouts occur. Often, several throwers will chose to specialize in one event if they rank top 48 in multiple categories. The Bison men have not had a NCAA First Round qualifier since 2019 and a shot putter has not attended since Joseph Breen (2016) a name mentioned this season as Shomper supplanted Breen as the record holder for the indoor and outdoor shot put this calendar year. Breen finished 46th that season.Â
Simbiri attended the competition, hoping to improve his personal record of 48-11.50 in the triple jump, and slide into the top 48. He finished fourth with a best attempt of 47-11.25. That mark arrived in his first try. Simbiri ended his first outdoor campaign sitting fifth in the Bucknell record book for the triple jump. The freshman has a bright future ahead of him in the Orange & Blue.Â
Bucknell will wait to see if Shomper earns an invitation. If fate does not smile on Shomper, he and the Bison men will return for the indoor season this December.Â
