LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell baseball team's home ballpark has undergone significant renovations in recent years, and soon the beautiful Depew Field facility will also bear the name of a former Bison player and one of the program's most dedicated supporters, David Marren '83, and his wife Caroline Marren '83. The stadium will be rededicated as Depew Field at Marren Park in a special pregame ceremony before Sunday's Bucknell-Army game.
The Marrens, who are the parents of three Bucknell graduates, have been proud and generous supporters of the Bison baseball program for many years, and their leadership gift has fueled the planning for a new indoor hitting facility and pitching lab that would support both the baseball and softball teams.
The Marren family will be joined at Sunday's ceremony by family members of the late Hall-of-Fame coach Gene Depew '71. David Marren played baseball and football at Bucknell – Depew was his coach on the diamond – and his son Peter '21 was also a member of the Bison baseball team.
"Adding the Marren family name to the Bucknell baseball stadium is another proud moment in the storied history of our program," said Tim Pavlechko '91, interim vice president and director of athletics & recreation. "Dave and Caroline, and the entire Marren family, are shining examples of Bucknellians who care deeply about their alma mater, and specifically in this instance, to enhance the student-athlete experience in our baseball program. We can't thank them enough for their generosity and what it means to future generations of student-athletes."
"The generosity of the Marrens and our other loyal supporters enables our program to excel in the highly competitive landscape of Division I baseball," said Scott Heather, who succeeded Depew as head coach after the 2012 season. "Two of my most cherished honors during my time at Bucknell are working under Gene Depew and getting to know the Marren family and seeing firsthand just how much they love their school. Now every time I come to the ballpark, I'll get to see the Depew and Marren names side-by-side and be reminded of why Bucknell is such a special place."
Bucknell has been playing baseball at its current West Fields location since 1990, and the facility was first dedicated in honor of Coach Depew on Apr. 17, 2003. Depew is Bucknell's longest-tenured baseball coach. He won 591 games in 31 years (1982-2012) and guided the Bison to five NCAA Tournament appearances. He was inducted into the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame with the 35th Class in 2013. He tragically passed away on Nov. 23, 2015, at the age of 66.
Depew Field has undergone several significant renovations in recent years, starting with the installation of a FieldTurf playing surface in 2009. A year later, new dugouts and fencing were added, and the construction of the spectator grandstands and pressbox was completed prior to the 2018 season. The Marrens have been lead supporters of all of these improvements.
In 2010, David and Caroline Marren dedicated the Memorial Plaza – the entranceway located between Depew Field and Becker Field (softball) – in memory of their nephew, Colin Marren '10.
Sunday's game will be the last of a three-game series between Bucknell and Army. First pitch is slated for noon, with the pregame ceremony starting at 11:40 a.m.
These two teams have met in the postseason in each of the last three years, including Patriot League championship series clashes in 2022 and 2023. The Bison will celebrate Senior Day in advance of Saturday's 1 p.m. game.
